(Spoilers, perhaps) This can be described as a Neapolitan Camorra semi-western noir film. It is set in 19th Century Naples and features Massimo Serato as Peppuccio, a man escaped from prison who kills the man who had betrayed him. He takes the man's girl as his lover (Nennella, played by Mirella Uberti). But Dolores (Maria Montez) daughter of Camorra boss Pietro (Folco Lulli) wants him for herself and winds up killing the guy in the movie's last minute when she realizes she can't have him. The Camorra itself is give near-mythic status as an almost legitimate organization, a shadow government with its own governing body, and kangaroo court. Most of the story is routine drivel, except perhaps for fans of Maria Montez, and even then so. Some credit should be given, however, to the moody and very effective photography by Anchise Brizzi and the very decent musical score by Renzo Rossellini. Marino Girolami directed without distinction.
