Under $5 million; no first time directors (unless there’s a named producer); actually good. These used to be the tenets by which Blumhouse built its name. But oh how things have changed. It’s looking increasingly like the little studio that could is making a land grab for virtually every property in horror-dom.
The latest trailer to drop from Blumhouse is for Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name which caused a big buzz when it hit Shudder for being so utterly and depressingly grim. Blumhouse snapped it up and cast James McAvoy, star of Blumhouse movies Split and Glass, as the central psycho. James Waktins who made similarly nasty and misanthropic horror Eden Lake has directed and the film is set to release in September. That is a pretty speedy turnaround as these things go, but Blumhouse always was agile. McAvoy is good...

Elegant Hollywood actor whose prolific career in the 1950s included the sci-fi classic It Came from Outer Space
In the 1950s, the elegant actor Barbara Rush, who has died aged 97, was extremely visible in films (she made 22 during the decade) and in fan magazines, especially during her marriage to the screen heartthrob Jeffrey Hunter. However, although she appeared opposite some of the top male stars of the day, she did not seem to have that extra je ne sais quoi needed to attain top-drawer status herself.
She met and fell in love with Hunter, who had just been put under contract by 20th Century Fox, a short time after her arrival in Hollywood, signed up by the Paramount studio. They were married in December 1950 before either of them had been seen on screen.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

Well, Mr. King, here’s your answer: the newest version of horror maestro Stephen King’s novel “Salem’s Lot” is coming out this year. Sometime. On streaming.
After initially being expected to hit theaters, New Line’s film adaptation of King’s 1975 bestselling novel “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max in 2024, the streamer announced today. As for when in 2024, we still don’t know, and as for what this thing will even look like, still no answer there, as today’s announcement came without any sort of handy-dandy still to round out the news.
The film was first announced in 2019 and was shot way back in 2021. As for when in 2024, we still don’t know, and as for what this thing will even look like, still no answer there, as today’s announcement came without any sort of handy-dandy still to round out the news.

Max has made it official that New Line’s feature take of Stephen King’s 1975 bestselling novel Salem’s Lot isn’t going in theaters, but on the Ott service this year. No exact date has been announced.
The buzz of this was heavily out there. It’s sort of an upset to Warner Bros Discovery: CEO David Zaslav has emphasized how he’s about theatrical, and how he doesn’t believe in straight-to-streaming movies. Salem’s Lot was expected to be another big play for New Line in the revived Stephen King big screen universe following the massive $1.1 billion global grossing success of the It franchise. In fact, the co-writer of that movie, Gary Dauberman, directed, adapted and executive produced Salem’s Lot. The movie originally occupied the post Labor Day space of 2022, a frame made rich by Warner Bros with Stephen King and Conjuring horror fare, until they pulled the...

James Wan’s Atomic Monster has settled a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit from a writer who accused the prolific horror movie producer of ripping off his screenplay to make Malignant.
Adam Cosco on Sunday moved to dismiss the case after reaching a deal to resolve the lawsuit. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Cosco, a writer and director on several short films, sued in 2022, claiming that his screenplay for Little Brother was plagiarized. He alleged that Wan, who wrote and directed Malignant, got his work through Ryan Turek, vice president of feature film development at Blumhouse who has collaborated with the horror director on projects.
According to the complaint, both screenplays feature a twist that the protagonist has her twin brother absorbed inside her in the form of a malignant tumor, an inciting incident where the main female character is a victim of violence at the hands...

As was the case with Strahovski’s and Speedman’s casting, most details on Spencer’s role are being kept under wraps for now. He’ll play a character named Ruben Shanley.
Teacup will follow a group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. The show’s setting departs from the novel, which took place in Texas. Peacock gave the project a series order in late 2022 after several months of development.

Three years have gone by since Simu Liu made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and while we’re still waiting to hear when exactly we’re going to see his character again, Liu has been keeping busy outside of the MCU. He recently had roles in Simulant, One True Loves, Barbie, and Arthur the King, he has been making music videos, and now Deadline reports that he’s set to star in an untitled espionage techno-thriller series for the Peacock streaming service and producer James Wan. Stephen King is urging Warner Bros. Discovery for an update on its long-awaited “Salem’s Lot” adaptation.
Legendary horror author King took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to question why the feature adaptation of his book “Salem’s Lot,” which was first announced in 2019 and shot way back in 2021, has yet to be released by Warner Bros.
“Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ and it’s quite good,” King wrote on social media. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything. Who knows. I just write the fucking things.”

Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.
The Liu project is one of four new series Peacock ordered Wednesday.

Peacock is bulking up its scripted roster.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer on Wednesday announced series orders for four new scripted originals, including Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary starring NBA legend Steph Curry and an untitled James Wan thriller with Simu Liu set to topline the drama. Also ordered to series are Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy from the creators of Dr. Death and All Her Fault, a suburban thriller based on the novel of the same name by Andrea Mara.
The news was announced Wednesday during Peacock’s time at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, where the streamer held panels for Apples Never Fall and The Traitors, among others.
The pickups join a roster of scripted series at Peacock that also includes Apples Never Fall, Hysteria!, The Tattooist Of Auschwitz, Those About To Die, Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, We Are Lady Parts, Teacup The Day of the Jackal...

This year’s first new theatrical release for the horror genre was Universal, Blumhouse and producer James Wan’s Night Swim, which we’ve learned is headed home this week.
Night Swim is available to rent or own on Digital tomorrow, January 23.
Direcred by Bryce McGuire, Night Swim was released into theaters on January 5, 2024. To date, the film has managed to scare up $36 million at the worldwide box office.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bd, “McGuire’s feature expansion [of his short film, also titled Night Swim] showcases more ways to mine terror from the aquatic concept, buoyed by a great cast, but a familiar formula and simplified mythology threaten to sink it all.”
Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness,...

Action-paced, international intrigue ensues when a Swiss bank president hires an American investigator to ferret out a group of blackmailers who have been terrorizing his clients in The Swiss Conspiracy, available 20th February 2024 in a special collector’s edition on Blu-ray and DVD from Film Masters.
Scanned in 4K from original 35mm archival elements, The Swiss Conspiracy has never seen a high-quality release to date. Film Masters has enlisted colorist and restoration expert Marc Wielage to painstakingly bring back vibrant and original colors that have not been seen since this film made its original debut in 1976.
Shot entirely in and around Zurich, The Swiss Conspiracy, based on the hit novel by Michael Stanley, was directed by Jack Arnold, best known for B horror/cult movie classics such as The Incredible Shrinking Man, Tarantula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space and The Tattered Dress. Speak No Evil is on the move, with Blumhouse and Universal pushing it to Sept. 13. It previously was slated for Aug. 9.
It will now go head-to-head with the animated Paramount feature Transformers One.
James McAvoy stars in the remake of the Danish psychological horror thriller Gaesterne. According to the logline, it is “about a family invited for a weekend at an idyllic country house—a dream holiday that warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.” Christian Tafdrup was behind the original movie, which was nominated for 11 Danish Film Awards, the country’s Oscars equivalent.
James Watkins, who helmed Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, wrote and directed the feature. He is also known for work on the mind-bending Netflix series Black Mirror.
Blumhouse’s Jason Blum is producing. Executive producers are Paul Ritchie, Tafdrup, Jacob Jarek and Bea Sequeira. Blumhouse, which recently completed its merger with James Wan’s Atomic Monster,...

Universal, Blumhouse and co-producer James Wan took us for a Night Swim in theaters over the weekend, with the Bryce McGuire-directed horror movie becoming the genre’s very first theatrical release of the new year. Was it a strong start for the horror genre, you ask?
Night Swim debuted in 3,250 theaters across the United States over the weekend, opening to $12 million domestically. Worldwide, the film scared up $17.6 million in its debut.
Here’s the day-to-day breakdown here in the United States:
Friday, January 5: $5,250,000 Saturday, January 6: $4,180,000 Sunday, January 7: $2,570,000
For the sake of comparison, Blumhouse’s M3GAN was released in January of last year, and the viral appeal of the title character drove the film to a $30 million domestic opening. Granted, nobody in their right mind expected Night Swim to perform the way M3GAN did.
Other recent Blumhouse releases and their domestic opening weekend totals include Five Nights at Freddy’s...

In our Thursday predictions I said that anything over $15 million would take first place. Although that was a correct statement, I thought that the new Blumhouse horror film Night Swim would be the film to hit that mark as horror films tend to be a big draw in the first month of the year. Instead, 2024 kicks off much the way 2023 ended, with Wonka continuing its dominating run with another $14.4 million added to its stellar $164.6 million running domestic total.
Wonka saw a modest debut of $39 million roughly four weeks ago and had the potential to take a nosedive in the weeks after, but word of mouth has been tremendous for this Timothée Chalamet starring musical prequel that has kept families coming back week after week. This truly is The Greatest Showman of 2023/2024 as that film had an even worse opening ($8.8 million) but was propelled by great word of mouth to a domestic total of $174.3 million,...

Sunday Am Writethru: While the supply of movies was able to keep the two-week holiday box office up over 2022’s by 13%, the lack of a mega tentpole carrying over into the New Year — ala Avatar: The Way of Water — is being felt.
The first weekend’s box office of 2024 looks to be down -18% from the same period in 2023, with an estimated $87M. If we thought the fall box office was wonky, well, here comes 2024. Remember, last year at this time had M3GAN providing a cushion. However, Universal/Blumhouse’s Night Swim is not that hipster, young female YA movie, with a No. 2 debut at $12M (granted at the top of its projection range).
Warner Bros.’ Wonka won its third out of four weekends with $14.4M and a $164.6M running total. Overall, that’s a four-weekend No. 1 streak for Warner Bros. There are still kids off from school, with...
