Monsieur Hulot comes to a beachside hotel for a vacation and accidentally, but good-naturedly, causes havoc.
The film, particularly the setting of the old-world beach resort, was inspired by Jacques Tati's own middle-class background and earliest memories.
...and, dear Lady, in those days I was a Cavalry Captain, and there was discipline and authority!
When Hulot tries to get a book around another person, a book appears on the lamp table from nowhere.
The film ends with a shot of the now-deserted beach, over which is superimposed a graphic of a bright red postmarked stamp.
Original French version is ca. 18 minutes longer than the US version.
