  • Considering it's age the puppeteering technique is still mediocre.

However, the classic story is entertaining and educational (??).

It's made my kids want to brush their teeth!

Karius and Baktus are to endearing troll-like bacteria living in a young boy's mouth. They lead a comfortable existence in their abodes in cavities that they have made in young Jens's teeth. However, when their activities start to cause their host pain, danger looms for the two charmingly sadistic fellows in the guise of a toothbrush and a dentist...

Do not be alarmed by the apparent didactic purpose of this film: Whether or not it is effective in encouraging young children to improve their dental hygiene has not been established (to my knowledge) - but it makes for an extraordinarily entertaining viewing experience, for kids and adults alike - it is at times extremely funny, sad, a bit scary, and quite, quite bizarre.

I must admit I might be biased, being a Norwegian, and having grown up with this film on children's television shows at least once a year. I am not sure of the extent of international releases, but I sure hope any foreign versions have retained the endearing laughter of Baktus from the original soundtrack.

Karius og Baktus is a classic. Technically amazing, considering its age, it is also very funny.
