This post-war German movie is obscure - not listed on German Wikipedia for starring Paul Hörbiger (who was a powerful workhorse in films 1928-71). It was reissued on DVD by e-m-s/Magic Picture in 2008, and in quite a nice package.
The story circles around a shoe-shop owner somewhere in Bavaria, in power struggle with his wife, his son who runs an amateur jazz band, a girl who the son is supposed to date, switched identities (a classic comedy device for centuries) on a carnival (Fasching) backdrop. And an unwed father's melodram.
I did not experience laugh-out-loud moments, but wouldn't call it bad either. It's just a comedy, whose tries at romance aren't exactly convincing. But it delivers another facet of the German entertainment market in 1954 (2 years before I was born.. :^).
However, I like this DVD especially for its bonus tracks. You get a 10min Austrian documentary"Kinder fanden eine Heimat" on SOS children villages and 8 ancient trailers dated 1948-66 (the last, for an Alaska documentary, being somehow the odd one out) for films I've never heard of. Watching all of that in a row, I really felt moved back in time to before my birth, and had a great entertaining evening. Well worth the €3 I spent on the DVD at a second-hand shop :)
