A widow accepts a job as a live-in governess to the King of Siam's children.
This film featured three voice-only actors: Marni Nixon (for Anna), Leona Gordon (for some of Tuptim's scenes), and Rueben Fuentes (for Lun Tha). (Singer Marilyn Horne also contributes.)

The map of the world prominently visible in the classroom shows parts of the Arctic and Antarctic regions that hadn't yet been explored or mapped in 1862.
The credits first say "Twentieth-Century Fox presents a CinemaScope Picture in CinemaScope 55", and then they go on to say "Darryl F. Zanuck presents Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'The King and I'".
An overture was added to the film (and intermission and exit music as well) for the roadshow version, but were never used on the pre-1998 VHS versions or the 2014 DVD and Blu-ray.
