- Since this film takes place in 1850's Kentucky, slavery is a major matter in the plot. Slavery auctions, slavery around the plantations and the general demeaning attitude of the day is often evident. Terms such as "buck", "buck batter", "hot natured blacks","plantation negroes" etc. are used with regularity. A conversation with younger and less knowledgeable viewers would be helpful before the film to make them aware of the subject matter as certain scenes can be emotional and somewhat violent.
