During World War II, an American destroyer meets a German U-Boat. Both captains are experts, and so begins a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
This film's plot device of two enemy commanders who grew to respect one another in battle and realize only war prevented a friendship between them was also shared by Star Trek: The Original Series: Balance of Terror (1966). David Hedison, who is in this picture, also appeared in a similarly themed episode, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Killers of the Deep (1966), which also included stock footage from this movie.

In the card game scene Lt. Ware's body position shifts wildly throughout the bidding dialog - at first sitting upright and slightly hunched over the card table, then slouching to his left with his left arm on the table, then sitting far back in the chair, and finally slouching to his left with chin in hand.
