Air Force Colonel Jim Shannon is tasked to escort a defecting Soviet pilot who is scheming to lure Shannon to the USSR.
Howard Hughes briefly hired director Peter Godfrey, then replaced him with Josef von Sternberg, who worked on the film until February 1950. Robert Stevenson was also considered to direct, and Robert Sparks to produce.

the Russian jet at the beginning of the film is identified by the American pilot as a Yakulef Yak 12. The Yak 12 is not a jet but a STOL propeller aircraft.
