| Contains the most moving mourning scene of a king.
This movie has an authentic historical background of the war against the Carlistas with the reign of Alfonso XII who was a popular king in Spain. He falls in love with a singer, Mercedes and soon after he is proclaimed king. The movie has also an interest for non-Spanish people because of its similarity with "Sisi" (Romy Schneider) the Austrian princess. Royal dramas have the advantage of showing beautiful dresses and uniforms, kings falling in love with simple girls and showing something of the habits and history of the country.
