Disney Princesses get a bad rap, but the truth is, they are uniquely suited to inspire young children - no matter the child's gender. Critics may claim that princesses lack depth and wait passively for a man to sweep them off their feet, but that plot line simply isn't present in Disney's modern films. Instead, these girls and women chase their dreams, show kindness universally, and even challenge the patriarchy.
These girls and women chase their dreams, show kindness universally, and even challenge the patriarchy.
Disney has come a long way since the release of its original princess film, Snow White, in 1937. The star of Moana (2016) saves the Polynesian Islands from complete destruction by being the only one who recognizes that the assumed villain is really the creator goddess transformed by emotional pain. To help restore the goddess to her former, loving self, Moana opens her arms to it with love and healing.

The Pruitts aren't an entirely likeable bunch.
And as it turns out, the people they choose to associate with aren't exactly upstanding citizens, either. We learn at least that much during Tell Me A Story Season 2 Episode 1.
Can an entire get built around people for whom you initially care so little? It's happened before, but this group might be a challenge.
Even before the devasting attack that leaves YouTube star and talented young singer Ashley Rose Pruitt scarred both mentally and physically, there are still visible strains within the family.
It doesn't seem like a surprise that eldest daughter Maddie's boyfriend, Tucker, is a creepy stalker.
It didn't seem like an unusual experience for him to track her while she was jogging as if he was a nutter. And the way he grabbed her and threw her to the ground, while ultimately a cute moment, suggests she might crave similar thrills.

Disney is looking to once again bring honor to the story of Mulan. The second trailer for the film, directed by Niki Caro, was released this morning and further teased a significant reimaging of the classic 1998 animated film directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. Disney has been re-exploring its animated properties with increased fervor of late. This year alone saw remakes of Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Lady and the Tramp, and the sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which works in context of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Mulan is bowing down to no one.
The second trailer for the highly anticipated live-action film debuted on Thursday featuring new looks at familiar (and unfamiliar) characters and settings. It also retells the character’s origin story, and her desire to live up to her duty.
“Do you know why the Phoenix sits at the right hand of the emperor? She is his guardian, his protector,” Mulan’s dad tells her at the beginning of the trailer. “She’s both beautiful and strong. Your job is to bring honor to the family. Do you think you can do that?”

Tell Me A Story Season 2 begins on Thursday. This season there will be three new fairytales woven together to merge into one seamless tale.
Tell Me A Story Season 1 featured the tales of The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel to great effect.
Can the latest season match the heights with retellings of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast?
Critics received the first two episodes of the second season which set the stage for the stories to begin.
Set in Nashville, Tennessee, we meet the Pruitt family including matriarch Rebecca (Carrie-Ann Moss) and her three children, Ashley (Natalie Alyn Lind), Maddie (Odette Annable), and Jackson (Matt Lauria).

Lilly Singh lampooned Disney Plus’ disclaimer that certain older movies include “outdated cultural depictions” on her NBC show.
The YouTube and late-night TV comedian took issue with Disney’s euphemistic phrasing — pointing out that the warning is really about the “racist” tropes in decades-old movies that were made for kids.
Disney Plus includes “a bunch of classic cartoons that come from a time before anyone cared about — how do I put this lightly? — being racist,” Singh said in a segment on “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” Thursday night. She cited the crows in “Dumbo” and the jazz-club cats in “The Aristocats.”
Singh, who is Indian-Canadian, added sarcastically, “‘Outdated’: because we all know racism is dead in 2019, right? I mean, just check my YouTube comments.”

‘Ford v Ferrari’
It was no-contest between Fox/Chernin Entertainment’s Ford v Ferrari and Sony Pictures’ Charlie’s Angels reboot at Australian cinemas last weekend.
Paradoxically, James Mangold’s drama based on the 1966 Le Mans race between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari opened marginally below the Us but streets ahead of Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels which, however, outperformed the dismal Us bow.
Exhibitors were hoping for more from both titles. “Things are difficult in cinema land at the moment,” says Wallis Cinemas’ soon-to-depart programming manager Sasha Close. “It seems audiences might be waiting for the big Disney films, with Frozen 2 opening on November 28 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker launching on December 19.
“Both Ford v Ferrari and Charlie’s Angels fell slightly short of our estimates. Whilst Ford v Ferrari may be propelled along for a few weeks by good word of mouth and reviews, the Charlie’s Angels reboot...

It's almost 2020, and there's one piece of pop culture hasn't changed in decades: the Disney princess obsession. Sure, they're a classic part of the Disney brand, but do they still have a place in the modern world? In recent years, Disney has been moving towards less passive princesses, but it might be time to consider moving away from royalty more often.
The reasons for Disney's original "princess" brand are pretty straightforward. The classic animation division specialized in adapting fairy tales, and a large number of fairy tales have princesses as their heroes. Presto: lots of Disney animated princesses!
"Passive princesses are out; tough, active, diverse women are in."
Fundamentally, a lot of fairy tales are about the concept of restoration, or, to be more specific, restoration to the social status quo. For instance, Cinderella (and not just the Disney version) is an aristocrat by birth who's forced "down" the social/class ladder into servitude,...

With new exclusive behind the scenes pictures, director Kevin Lima takes us through Enchanted, as it hits its 10th birthday.
It’s been ten years since the terrific Enchanted arrived in UK cinemas, just under two months after it premiered at the London Film Festival. The film made a star of Amy Adams, brought back 2D animation from Disney to the big screen, and has a songbook that sits happily alongside the top end of Disney work. Plus, the film remains a flat out family treat.
“It has been a long time” Lima chuckled, apologising in advance if he couldn’t recall all the answers I was after. Turns out he didn’t do too badly. He spared me some time to look back over the film, the challenges of making it, and what happened next…
I’ve only just discovered that Enchanted actually had its premiere in the UK!

Disney is very controlling of everything they own. The vault lets them control the supply of their movies and they don’t want anything leaked that could even hint to a child that Disneyland is not a magical place. That is why it is so cool that they have released a time-lapse video of a crew working through the night to transform Sleeping Beauty’s Castle for the holiday season. It’s not a fake video of fairies flying around waving their magic wands and throwing pixie dust everywhere, but an actual video that features people on cranes lowering the decorations into place and the crew moving lights. This peek behind the curtain is rare and interesting to watch. Did you know that the tops came off like that?...

Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen‘s personality conflicts played a large role in their split, a source close to the actress tells People.
“Rachel is very outgoing and her friends are very important to her,” says the source. “Hayden is the opposite. He can be very antisocial.”

The pair, who met on the set of their 2008 film Jumper and are parents to 2½-year-old daughter Briar Rose, have had a series of ups and downs in their time together.

Oscar winner Angelina Jolie has confirmed she will reprise her role as Disney's most famous 'wicked witch' 'Maleficent' in "Maleficent 2" currently in pre-production for producer Joe Roth:
"We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel," said Jolie at the recent Telluride Film Festival.
The first "Maleficent" screenplay was written by Linda Woolverton ("Alice In Wonderland") who tailored the screenplay to accomodate Jolie:
"...'Maleficent' is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic 'Sleeping Beauty'.
"A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, 'Maleficent' has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom...until one day an invading army threatens the harmony of the land.
"Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.

This much is certain about the Twin Peaks revival finale airing this Sunday: the following nine words of dialogue will be featured somewhere across the two hours.
“The past dictates the future.”
“What is your name?”
RelatedTwin Peaks Part 16 Recap: Sleeping Beauty
Those two lines of dialogue have been respectively attached to Parts 17 and 18, serving as ersatz titles (as has been the case all season long). Once it became clear that each “title” was a sound bite from the actual episode, it’s been a slight sport to take a guess at which character will utter the line.

Lifetime on Thursday served up a bloody good episode of Project Runway — emphasis on “bloody.”
IcymiLast Week’s Project Runway Recap: Was the Right Designer Trashed?
Things began innocently enough, with the remaining 14 designers getting cozy and watching Leap; the animated movie’s “dance, movement and innovation” was meant to inspire their looks. But aside from Brandon, who remained focused in his own personal zen bubble, there was very little grace in the workroom this week.
The first to draw blood was Deyonté, who accidentally pulled a Sleeping Beauty and stuck himself with the needle of his sewing machine. The...

70mm is back! Thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan, one of the oldest and grandest traditions in Hollywood is making a comeback after years of financial setbacks and near-extinction. As Nolan has said many times, shooting in 70mm proved an immersive and more textured experience than any other form of cinema (side note: The 70mm film process actually uses 65mm film stock, which is printed onto 70mm film for projection purposes).

Due to the costly nature of film and theaters’ lack of 70mm projectors, it’s been quite a challenge to get to a place where Tarantino and Nolan can make entire features using 65/70mm, but the preservation of film is turning in their favor. This month, “Dunkirk” will give audiences the chance to see what happens when Nolan makes an...

To many he was Dr. Cliff Huxtable, America’s dad and neighbor. There was nothing he could do wrong -- or at least seemingly so -- and so it came as a surprise to many (and probably to him), when in 2014, a comedian cracked, “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby.” Three years later, he’s standing trial for sexual assault.
Broad City star Hannibal Buress’ 2014 comedy set in the veteran entertainer’s hometown of Philadelphia reignited a firestorm of sexual assault allegations that had largely been suppressed thanks to Cosby’s overwhelming star power. During an Entertainment Tonight interview, former supermodel Janice Dickinson accused Cosby of raping her in a Lake Tahoe hotel room in 1982. Cosby’s then-lawyer Marty Singer, high-powered attorney to stars like Kim Kardashian, dismissed her claims as a “lie,” and she responded with a defamation lawsuit.
However Cosby’s attempts to move past the accusations weren’t as useful this time. In...
