In 1870s, in the Sioux territory south of the Missouri, trapper and Indian scout Luther Yellowstone Kelly is hired by the army at Fort Buford but runs into trouble with the Sioux.
John Russell as of the December 1959 release date had been starring as the title character in Lawman (1958) since 1958. Being another Warner Brothers production, most of the 9 main credited actors here had either guest starred on Lawman or would do so within a year or two (the series ended in 1962). Ray Danton was notable as he appeared twice in the series. There as here, there was conflict between his character and Russell's. His character was killed both times by Russell's character the Marshal.
Yeah, he said he was gonna cross the Yellowstone and jump the Sioux.
Anse Harper: Will he try a fool thing like that?
Yellowstone Kelly: If he does, the ground is going to be full of soldiers.
After Kelly shoots Sayapi, and walks over to his body, Sayapi takes a breath. You can see his chest move.
Opening credits: The West was opened by courageous trail-blazing pioneers like Lewis & Clark and Luther "Yellowstone" Kelly, - - trapper, surveyor, and indian scout who was the first frontiersman to cross the mighty Yellowstone Valley.
