Doris Day, Ross Hunter and Universal
Ross Hunter nearly saved Universal from going out of business in the late 50's early 60's. I know that is a big statement but consider the smash hits Hunter produced at Universal: Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back, Back Street, Imitation of Life, Portrait In Black, Madame X, et al. Hunter and Doris Day re united for Midnight Lace, a mystery, set in England but filmed mostly at Universal. As was the pattern of a Ross Hunter film there were great sets, and great clothes and in this film the late great Irene did Ms. Day's fashions. Doris Day was the box office champ with 5 years as Number One female star and to this day the record stands.
Ross Hunter cast as he always did a former great lady star and this time it is Myrna Loy, and along with John Gavin a Universal contract player, Hunter cast Rex Harrison as the male lead. Someone is trying to drive Doris Day crazy?, who is it?, see Midnight Lace!! Very enjoyable from the Ross Hunter make believe factory at Universal.
