The character of Hedy (Evans Evans) is intimated to be consumptive through her chronic cough, and her shameful facial response every time she gives over to it. The prostitute's discomfort in her own body was further emphasized by putting her in a dress whose sleeves wouldn't stay fastened, an idea borrowed from the costume Ava Gardner wore for her final book scene in Show Boat (1951).
