The Gangster Macheath secretly marries the daughter of beggar king Peachum. When Peachum finds out, he instructs the police chief Brown to arrest and hang Macheath. If not, all the beggars of Soho will disturb the upcoming coronation.
An earlier off-Broadway version (English adaptation by Marc Blitzstein), because it was a special "showcase" production, had a large turnover among its cast members. At one point, however, it featured Bea Arthur as Lucy Brown, and Paul Dooley and John Astin as two of MacHeath's men. Also among the cast for part of the run was Edward Asner as Peachum.
Sammy Davis Jr. appears only in the American version.
