Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

Disney+ has been around for awhile now so you should know the deal with these monthly new releases. Sometimes a given month on Disney+ is highlighted by a new Marvel show. Other times it’s a Star Wars show. With its list of new offerings for August 2022, however, Disney+ is pulling off the rare content eclipse: Marvel and Star Wars.
The biggest new arrival this month on Disney+ is undoubtedly She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Aug. 17. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) stars as Jennifer Walters, a normal human attorney who is somehow embiggified by her cousin Bruce Banner. Will this be the mythical Marvel TV offering that actually offers a non-serialized case-of-the-week format? Guess we’ll find out soon!

Robert B Sherman, who has died aged 86, was part of one of the most unusual songwriting teams of all time. He and his younger brother Richard may not be as well known as other pairs of composers and lyricists, but they will for ever be remembered as the writers of Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and a swath of other productions from Walt Disney Studios.
Their score for Mary Poppins (1964), the movie that introduced Julie Andrews to filmgoers, secured them a place in popular musical history and made them multimillionaires. Featuring songs including Jolly Holiday, Let's Go Fly a Kite and Feed the Birds, it won them two Oscars. It also included the classic A Spoonful of Sugar and the song with the one-word title that they used when they accepted the Academy awards: "All we can say is 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'.

As the TCM Classic Film Festival goes by in a blur, here are some of the highlights from the third day of festivities, which had festivalgoers scrambling to get into various venues:
* They were packed in like sardines at Peter O'Toole’s early morning hand and footprint ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Onhand with Mr. O’Toole and his family were The Stunt Man co-star Barbara Hershey, actress Anjelica Huston, and TCM stalwarts Robert Osborne and Rose McGowan (who did a high amount of flirting). The Oscar-nominated-but-yet-to-win actor provided the sound bite of perhaps the entire festival by quipping, “It’s been many years since I had an intimate relationship with cement.” You can check out video from the event here.
* Hayley Mills dazzled Leonard Maltin and numerous others with appearances at both Summer Magic and The Parent Trap; at the identical twin comedy, the communal spirit brought out.
