In 1956 the film was originally announced as a musical to star Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis as the brothers eventually played by Lee Marvin; several years later, John Saxon was linked to the project, most likely playing some version of one of the younger characters portrayed by Dwayne Hickman or Tom Nardini.
Professor Sam The Shade, The Sunrise Kid:
Well now friends just lend an ear for you're now about to hear the Ballad of Cat Ballou.
When Cat is jumping from the train, she jumps onto finely grained gravel and it appears from the sun angle that it is mid-afternoon. In the very next shot, when they are dusting themselves off and laughing, the side of the track is large loose gravel, and it appears from the sun angle that it is very late in the afternoon.
The opening Columbia logo is followed by the first verse of the "Cat Ballou" song, sung by the Shouters Nat 'King' Cole and Stubby Kaye as a prologue.
