When writing a letter to the Great Pumpkin, Linus states, "You must get discouraged because more people believe in Santa Claus than in you. Well, let's face it, Santa Claus has had more publicity, but being #2, perhaps you try harder." This is a reference to an advertising slogan for Avis Rent-a-Car that was well known in the 1960s.
Linus:
You didn't tell me you were gonna kill it!
Linus and Sally have the moon behind them in the pumpkin patch while Snoopy has the moon behind him as well. They are facing each other, therefore making it seem as though there are two moons.
As with other specials in the series, the animation department is called "Graphic blandishment".
The version of the show broadcast on CBS from the late 1970s until it went to ABC was edited, cutting out most of the Trick or Treat/I got a rock sequence. This version was also time-compressed. Some older video releases also edit this sequence and also the scene where Snoopy dances along to Schroeder's World War I-era piano music. Later airings on CBS in the late 1990s would also cut the scene where Lucy pulls the football away when Charlie Brown attempts to kick it. The Paramount video release is unedited.
