The story of Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII when the King rejected the Roman Catholic Church to obtain a divorce and remarriage.
The producers originally wanted Sir Laurence Olivier as Thomas More, and Sir Alec Guinness as Wolsey, but Director Fred Zinnemann insisted on Paul Scofield (who had originated his role in the stage play) and Orson Welles in the roles.

When Henry VIII's court enters Sir Thomas' yard, their feet are no longer muddy after the previous shot showed them getting muddy.
