1968's "Planet of the Apes" is one of the most legendary sci-fi movies in cinematic history. Co-written by Rod Serling of "The Twilight Zone" fame and directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, it spawned a franchise that is still going strong to this day.
It all started, however, with the story of astronauts landing on a mysterious planet filled with intelligent apes, only to discover that they were actually on Earth in the distant future. Led by Charlton Heston, the film boasted an incredible cast — not to mention some legendary practical makeup effects that helped bring the apes to life. Unfortunately, when a film is more than 50 years old, not many people from the cast are going to be around any longer. Luckily, a couple of key cast members are indeed still here to help keep the legacy alive.

When the petition to get James Hong a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame began, the response was immediate and overwhelming. Recognizing the groundbreaking body of work from the 93-year-old actor, who has more than 650 credits to his name, actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim started a crowdfunding campaign in 2020 to raise the 55,000 necessary for the star. The goal was met within four days.
The only person who didn’t respond right away was Hong himself. “In actuality, I didn’t hear a thing,” Hong says with a laugh. “Somehow the internet wasn’t quite working or I didn’t get the email. The next thing I hear, they had the money already.”
Hong, who will receive his star in a ceremony on May 10, is still somewhat overwhelmed by the honor. “I want to thank all the fans and friends who donated their money. It boggles my mind to think that...

The crime drama is nearly as old as television itself, with its first success, "Dragnet," making the jump from radio to the tube in the 1940s, and the genre has thrived ever since. However, while some modern shows have successfully used the format to talk about bigger things, it's a harder genre to love today.
Though enjoyed worldwide, cop and crime shows in the U.S. haven't always kept up with the culture. While most of the best examples we have can look, unflinchingly, at some of the too-optimistic portrayals of the police and discuss them, some still retain the Western-style simplistic polarity of bad guys versus good. When the news was first announced that the original Law & Order, aka the Mothership, was coming back, fans were super excited. But at the back of everyone's mind was one question: could they pull it off?
The world has changed significantly since Law & Order went off the air in 2010; could a series closer to shows like Dragnet than to its own spin-offs be successful now?
The good news is that Law & Order Season 21 Episode 1 wasted no time bringing up racism, negative attitudes toward cops, and other issues that are often in the news. While it didn't navigate these stories perfectly, it did a good enough job to be compelling television.
Interestingly, the writers chose to lead off with a story that could have fit comfortably on its sister series, Law & Order: Svu.
Not only did the second half of the hour revolve around the prosecutors' quest...

Kate Winslet’s tough but tender small-town police detective Mare Sheehan of HBO’s acclaimed crime thriller “Mare of Easttown” is the latest in a long line of female TV detectives including S. Epatha Merkerson (“Law & Order”); Helen Mirren (“Prime Suspect”); Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer); Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: Svu”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”).
Unfortunately, it took an inordinate amount of time for actresses to get a fair shake in police procedurals. Early TV crime dramas were inundated with the likes of taciturn toughies Lee Marvin (“M Squad”), Robert Taylor (“The Detectives”), Jack Webb (“Dragnet”) and Broderick Crawford (“Highway Patrol”). Way too much testosterone.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I've spent 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out. This is the final Forgotten By Fox entry."Have you ever seen any of your victims?" Robert Shaw is asked mid-way through End of the Game (1975), a line borrowed from The Third Man (1949). This I take to be author Friedrich Dürrenmatt's revenge, on behalf of his native Switzerland, for Orson Welles' celebrated crack about the cuckoo clock in Carol Reed's thriller, which appeared just before he wrote the book this film is based on.End of the Game is adapted from Dürrenmatt's 1950 novel The Judge and His Hangman by the author himself and Maximilian Schell, who also directs, inventively if a little inconsistently. Some scenes have the correct tragic force...

Tom Hanks may have cemented a reputation as one of the finest talents of his generation when he scooped consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, but during the early days of his career, the up and coming star was in real danger of being pigeonholed as a comedian, albeit a very gifted one.
Seven of Hanks’ first nine movie credits were in the comedy genre, and performances in the likes of Splash, The Money Pit and Dragnet all saw him win praise from critics for his effortless comic timing and natural charisma. However, it was the tenth entry on his filmography that rocketed him towards the top of the Hollywood A-list, and he still hasn’t come down over 30 years later.

Join Joe Friday and Frank Smith as they make a case against the rotten gangland crooks that moiderized Dub Taylor with a shotgun, point blank! See detectives loiter about while smart remarks and Big music stings provide the excitement! The big-screen version of the hit TV show has a surfeit of guest crooks, unhappy women, and a script that wants to grant cops the right to harass and wiretap whoever they wish without restraint. Jack Webb’s ‘interesting’ ideas of script, performance and direction are really… interesting. The Joe Friday-fest comes with an informative commentary by Toby Roan, laying down plenty of Dragnet and Jack Webb history I didn’t know, not ‘just the facts.’

Months before the 2016 presidential election, Alternet writer Adam Johnson used the term “copraganda” to describe any media story that “that uncritically advances a police department’s image or helps undermine reform efforts.” The same label can be applied to the way film and television have carefully sculpted the way we view law enforcement for nearly a century. Rookie cops, hero cops, crooked cops, buddy cops, supernatural cops, even a series devoted to a “Maniac Cop.” Filmmakers like David Ayer have practically built careers out of rehashing the “dirty cop” story in films like “Training Day” and “End of Watch.” Networks have flooded our TV screens for decades with stories like “Dragnet,” “Law & Order,” NYPD Blue,” “C.S.I.,” and enough spin-offs, reboots, and copycats to fill its own streaming channel.

“The story you are about to see is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.” Every episode of “Dragnet,” the godfather of TV police procedurals that ran in the 1950s, began with these words. They were a promise that what viewers were about to see was a faithful re-creation of how police detectives investigate crime and how police as a whole conduct themselves in their jobs to protect and serve. It is a tradition that has continued in modern times with shows like “Hill Street Blues,” “Hawaii Five-o,” “Law & Order,” “Swat” and hundreds of crime shows that have become part of the backbone of network primetime programming. But as millions around the world protest and demand accountability from police, a larger examination of the police procedural as a genre may be coming. Procedurals aren’t necessarily aimed at addressing systemic problems in law enforcement. While problems...

Award shows hardly seem like the most important front in the battle to protect Black lives from police brutality, but the media plays a big part in setting the terms of our cultural debate, and while not everyone agrees on whether we should defund or abolish the police, we may be at a point where we no longer assume that police are the heroes of our stories. So will that affect the Emmys, where the TV industry decides which stories it values?
Police stories have inherent dramatic tension: murders, mysteries, good guys tracking down bad guys. So it’s no wonder that they’ve been all over the Emmys too, from “Dragnet” in the 1950s to “Police Story” in the 1970s, “Hill Street Blues” and “Cagney and Lacey” in the 1980s, and “NYPD Blue” and “Law and Order” in the 1990s. Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

“Dragnet.” “Mission Impossible.” “The Twilight Zone.” “Law and Order.” Odds are even if you’ve never seen an episode of these television shows, you’ve heard their theme songs, and they are now going through your head. These are just a few of the iconic scores from television series that have become ingrained in our popular culture. How does a short bit of music snake its way into our memories, and become a great theme song?
If you have memories of sitting barefoot in front of the television after a hard day of play, or staying home sick from school and snuggling on the couch with a favorite program playing, or gossiping with friends about the “I can’t believe that happened!” moment on a popular series, then it is likely that a familiar tune will take you back to one of those moments in time. A key element of The Brady Bunch was the little life lessons and morals that the show would offer up in pretty much every episode. Whether you viewed them as corny or enlightening, they made an impact. And it was certainly one of the big appeals to not only the audience, but the young cast who brought the bunch to life. For actor Barry Williams, who played oldest boy Greg, it was the way the show ended for real (rather than reel) that, ironically, served as perhaps the greatest lesson of all. The Brady Bunch, which brought together a lovely lady with three very lovely girls and a man with three boys of his own, made its debut in 1969 and ran for five seasons, concluding in 1974. At the end of that fifth season, there was every expectation the cast and crew would be back for a sixth. But just three...

More sad news to pass along from Old Hollywood: veteran character actor G.D. Spradlin died in his San Luis Obispo cattle ranch on Sunday from natural causes. He was 90. Spradlin -- who was such a successful independent oil producer in Oklahoma during the 1950s that he retired in 1960 -- began acting in the late '60s with roles on television series like Gomer Pyle, I Spy and Dragnet, and broke out following his appearance as slimy senator Pat Geary in The Godfather Part II. Ahead, remember Spradlin by watching his best Godfather moment.

I'm not gonna lie, it's a pretty uninteresting week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. The only really high profile flick in stores today is Antoine Fuqua's Brooklyn's Finest starring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes. Yep, getting to the bottom of the barrel pretty quickly here. It's around this time that TV DVD releases really start to get amped up. After all, it's the build-up to the fall season, and that means that studios are pushing out their shows on DVD to not only attract new viewers, but to remind old viewers that their show still exists after a long hiatus. It's an effective marketing strategy, though the sudden dump of DVDs might make it hard on fans' wallets.
