This movie p***es me off. It's bad enough for me to hate... except for the parts I like. The parts I like, I like so much that it infuriates me that I can't stand the rest. The attempts at psychedelic-surrealism are utterly contrived, except sometimes it works. The Sixties were maturing into it's deepest, coolest, richest period and the Monkees were a contrived and superficial band. So the members of the band tried to shed their old manufactured image for something deeper, cooler and more sincere. They didn't pull it off and everybody could see they didn't... "Head" bombed badly! Put a sit-com on acid, it's weird, but it's still only a sit-com on acid. That said, a sit-com on acid is weird, and that, I think, is what makes the movie appealing now. It's certainly the only one of it's kind. Good? Bad? Ah, hell, I was there then, I'm here now, and I just don't know. But I don't regret seeing it.
