The Monkees are tossed about in a psychedelic, surrealist, plotless, circular bit of fun fluff.
When it was finally edited together into a cohesive whole, it ran ten minutes short of an unprecedented two hours. A poor audience response at an August 1968 screening in Los Angeles eventually forced the producers to edit the picture down to eighty-six minutes.
Hey! Nobody walks out on me! Not even myself!
As Micky is sliding down the vacuum cleaner inlet, Peter's shadow can be seen at the top of the slide as he moves into position.
The movie ends with a still shot of a stylized, apparently vintage Columbia Pictures logo. The "film" then: 1) skips a few frames, 2) gets tangled up in the projector mechanism, 3) catches fire and burns/melts, and 4) the film on which all of this has been filmed breaks as the soundtrack continues. As the music ends, the laugh of the woman kissing the Monkees in the first scene is heard again.
When the film was previewed in August 1968, its original cut ran about 110 mins. It was trimmed down to 86 mins. for the premiere.
