Is Paris Burning? Composed by Maurice Jarre, The 50th Anniversary Recording of the Complete Score. A Special Collectors 2 CD Edition featuring a brand new recording by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Conducted by Nic Raine. Released by Tadlow Music, Price: £16.95 TADLOW023, Date: August 25th 2016 Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris.
It’s always exciting to receive the latest release from Tadlow music. When award winning producer James Fitzpatrick and respected conductor Nic Raine join forces and combine their talents, you know the result is always going to be good. Maurice Jarre’s music is, of course, nothing new to the long standing partnership. Together in recent years, they have overseen triumphant new recordings of Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Villa Rides (1968).
Is Paris Burning? (1966) is their latest collaboration and features the complete 69 minute film score including previously unrecorded cues. A great deal of Jarre’s patriotic score is heavily militaristic,...

Is there such a thing as a perfect film? Perhaps. You could certainly argue that personal taste plays into the question of perfection too much -- one man's triumph is another's disaster. And even so, there are so many possible things that can go wrong with a film -- one duff performance, one ill-conceived shot, one poorly-written scene -- that it's almost an impossible task. But dammit if we don't consider "Chinatown" to be as close as you can get to being perfect.
Starting with a devilishly complex, yet brilliantly simple script from Robert Towne, still one of the finest ever written, it displays top class at every level, from Roman Polanski directing at his peak (in his last American film), to ace performances from Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and Walter Huston, to Jerry Goldsmith's all-time-great score. It's hard to ask for much more from a film. "Chinatown" was...

The late, legendary film composer Maurice Jarre's soundtrack recordings for the Westerns Villa Rides! and El Condor have been released on a single CD. Here is background from the Screen Archives web site:
"A few months after my Oscar for Doctor Zhivago, Columbia contacted me to do The Professionals, and I literally fell off my chair. I thought I was too French to get involved in such a typically American genre as the western. To me, succeeding with this score amounted to getting a Hollywood certificate, proof that I belonged; it was a test, like a ragging in college..." Maurice Jarre was talking about his relationship to westerns, a genre which symbolizes American films, and the composer went on to work on eight full-length features. Among them were two pictures with very rare scores: Villa Rides! (never reissued on CD before now) and El Condor (which has never been...

Serbian director Emir Kusturica is ready to make a movie about Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. He's given it a ridiculously long title -- Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers (dear God, I hope they change that) -- and he's out on the town, looking for talent. Luckily, he appears to have found some major talent in the likes of Johnny Depp and Salma Hayek. According to Variety, Depp is in "advanced negotiations" to star as Pancho Villa. He would join a legion of actors who have played the iconic revolutionary (who oddly, does not have his own t-shirt like Ché). The list includes Yul Brenner (Villa Rides, 1968) and Antonio Banderas (And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, 2003). What's more interesting is that the Spanish-language biopic is to be shot partly in Mexico, where Villa -- an early 20th-century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and a hero to the poor -- is an...
