Although the series did well in the ratings, it was considered expensive to produce by the BBC due to the amount of specially commissioned props that needed to be built and amount of location shooting that each series required. In 1980 the BBC decided to drop production of any future series due to budgetary factors and the fact that they were eager to commission a TV series of Douglas Adams successful radio show 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy' which was effects heavy and going to cost a considerable amount of money to finance. This resulted in The Goodies signing a deal with London Weekend Television to produce the next series of The Goodies (broadcast at the beginning of 1982). The BBC were then free to set aside the budget they would otherwise have allocated for a Goodies series and use it to finance 'Hitchhikers' which was broadcast in 1981 to great critical acclaim and the show was a ratings hit too. The Goodies LWT show only lasted one series before being canned due to budget cutbacks.
