- Chief Frank Untermyer: [as August starts to leave the room] Where are you going?
- Lieutenant Dan August: I'm a detective. I'm going out to detect.
- [Leaves]
- Sergeant Charles Wilentz: A detective. That's what I want to be when I grow up.
- Chief Frank Untermyer: There's no money in it.
- Mayor Jack Parker: The out-of-state papers have always made California sound like a, well, like a vacation spot for the criminally insane.
- Mayor Jack Parker: Your man's getting a little insolent, Chief.
- Chief Frank Untermyer: He's not my man. That's why I like him.
- Mayor Jack Parker: Oh? Well, you get this straight. From now on don't expect any favors from me.
- Chief Frank Untermyer: I don't think you owe me any. I didn't even vote for you.
- Chief Frank Untermyer: He's a good cop, Jack. If you take him off this case, you might destroy him.
- Mayor Jack Parker: We're all good cops, Frank. It's just that some of us have learned to bend with the wind.
- Chief Frank Untermyer: Yeah, who knows. Maybe for a man that just shows a lack of spine.
- Sheriff Muntz: That's close to impertinence, Lieutenant.
- Lieutenant Dan August: Too bad, I thought I made it all the way.
- Sgt. Joe Rivera: Miss Crane was spending the weekend at a cabin up at Big Bear. I drove up early and there were three guys and three girls. All of them stoned on grass.
