After the Civil War, Cord McNally searches for the traitor whose treachery caused the defeat of McNally's unit and the loss of a close friend.
Robert Mitchum visited his son Christopher during filming. Director Howard Hawks asked the elder Mitchum to reprise his El Dorado (1967) role as a drunken Sheriff, but Mitchum claimed he was now retired. John Wayne responded, "Mitch has been retiring ever since the first day I met him."
Phillips: *That's* the best news I heared all *year*! Who killed 'im?
Cord McNally: *She* did!
Phillips: Well, I'll be a suck-egg mule-! Legs like *that*, and she can *shoot*, too!
At the end, when Sheriff Hendricks is coming out of the barn using his rifle as a crutch, he lifts his rifle up, and the barrel is clear. In the following closeup, it is clogged, causing the barrel to explode when he fires it.
