When his brother dies under mysterious circumstances in a car accident, London gangster Jack Carter travels to Newcastle to investigate.
Writer and director Mike Hodges chose the beach as the setting for the climax for its bleak, dark atmosphere, but when he returned to shoot the scene, he found it bathed in bright sunshine, unsuitable for the somber conclusion for which he was hoping. He waited several hours until the sun began setting to capture the overcast shadowy lighting seen in this movie.
Bollock naked with his socks still on?
Sid Fletcher: Yeah, they do it like that - up North.
Gerald Fletcher: What for? For protective purposes?
When Carter travels up from London and arrives in Newcastle he is wearing a plain black raincoat/overcoat. The next day at the funeral he has a reporter style black raincoat wIth belt and shoulder epaulets.
According to director Mike Hodges on the R2 commentary, when ITV first showed the film, the phone sex scene had been shortened.
