A blind man moves into his own apartment against the wishes of his overprotective mother and befriends the freethinking young woman next door.
Eileen Heckart was nominated for the 1970 Tony Award for Supporting or Features Actress in a Drama for "Butterflies are Free" but did not win, losing out to her co-star in the play Blythe Danner. She recreated her stage role in this movie version, and was Oscar nominated for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award, the same equivalent category as for the Tony Award, but this time, she won.
