The film begins with Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, and ends with Operation Cobra where Lieutenant General George S. Patton's 3rd Army leads the breakout from the Normandy beachhead. The music under the opening credits is the march from The Longest Day (1962) (the definitive nonfictional film about Operation Overlord) by Paul Anka, and the music under the end credits is the march from Patton (1970) by Jerry Goldsmith.
Maj. Gen. Joe Barrett:
So hey, what's this about you being a G-2?
Col. Douglas Graham: Well, when you're too old for command, and too young to retire, and too stupid to do anything else, there's only one place for you in this man's Army - Intelligence!
Scenes showing tanks switch between contemporary and M4 Shermans dating the movie to a period when realism was not as important, and functioning period vehicles were considered less important, and available.
