  • Raaste Kaa Pathar review :

One of Amitabh Bachchan pre-Zanjeer flops; Raaste Kaa Pathar had an interesting and oh-so-bold concept for the '70s. Amitabh played an executive in a modelling agency who lets his boss hire out his flat for their private affairs in order to further his career. One day, his super boss (Prem Chopra) asks for the keys to his house. Only Bachchan doesn't know that Chopra intends to take his lady love (Neeta Khayani) there..

There was a parallel track of Amitabh's jobless writer friend played by Shatrughan Sinha whose wife (Laxmi Chhaya) is forced to sell herself for a living in order to run the house.

Of the cast, Amitabh Bachchan had the central role and he nailed it. The sexy Laxmi Chhaya outshone the lead Neeta Khayani even in a smaller role. Shatrughan didn't suit the loser character he played. Prem Chopra was his usual. Satyen Kappu's wig was hideous to say the least..

At concept level, Raaste Kaa Pathar was too bold for the '70s which was the prime reason the film fared miserably at the box office. However, the same plot wowed the millennium audience when director Anurag Basu borrowed it for Life In A Metro (2007). A classic example of oft repeated filmi adage that what doesnt work today may work tomorrow!!

  • I like the movie but i was surprised by watching the drama that is in the office where seniors of a colleague used his flat to satisfying their desires. As this movie is from early seventy's and the same office drama i also saw in the movie METRO that is release in around 2005. Seriously our old Bollywood talent deserves a salute from this generation as well.

The year was 1972, Amitabh was not yet a star, he was struggling as an actor alongwith Shatrughan Sinha. They both unite in this film The film is similar to THE APARTMENT(1960), in Life in a Metro(2007) Sharman's story was quite similar to this film. The film is quite different fro it's times, here we are shown day to day life, how people have to obey their bosses and support their not so good intentions just for their better career prospects. The film has Shatru play a honest poet while Amitabh plays a guy who gives in to his manager's demands, they use his house to have sex. Quite unique thought in 1970s The film is well handled, with moments of comedy and emotion You relate to the characters, perhaps that time when characters had to be heroic people didn't hence it flopped. The film also drags at times yet it does have several good scenes

Direction is good Music is okay Mukesh and Rafi sing for Bachchan here

Amitabh Bachchan was growing as an actor, though he had rough edges he does a superb job in the role, showing good comic timing, his emotional scenes too are good his screen presence was a bit weak those days though Shatrughan Sinha has a short role and is good Laxmi Chaya is okay Satyen Kapoo, Prem Chopra and all are good in their roles rest are okay

This is one of Amitabh's very early films, released when he was not even a familiar star, let alone a superstar that he is today. It did not exactly fit in with the 'masala' films of 70s Bollywood and flopped at the box-office. Yet, despite being an almost unknown piece, the film has a strong central storyline and features by far the best acting performance form Amitabh Bachchan to date. In fact, I doubt very much if he will ever be able to match his role as Jaishankar Rai in this film.

Basically, it is based on the Shirley MacLaine-Jack Lemmon masterpiece, "The Apartment". While "Raaste ka Patthar" does not match its Hollywood inspiration, it is a very good movie in its own right. Amitabh's atypical role as a shy and timid clerk regularly manipulated and exploited by everyone around him is heartrendingly brilliant, as is his fantasy 'revenge' against his tormentors as the gun-slinging cowboy in his dreams. His co-stars also give better-than-average performances, notably Prem Chopra as Amitabh's manipulative boss and the almost unknown Nita Kahani as the heroine. I hope that I can get a DVD of this film someday.
