An old formular rejuvenated
Despite that fact that this film was one of the last Carry On's to be made and the classic jokes and gags were rather tired by now, for some reason they seem especially funny. There is nothing very different from this carry on film to the countless others, except for the fact this time the material seemed to really work, even though everyone knows the jokes. This Carry On adventure is set in an English seaside town. Kenneth Connor is the rather inebriated town Mayor, with Sid James (in his usual character type) and June Whitfield (the mother in Absolutely Fabulous) on the committee. It has come to the committee's attention that the town is losing tourists and something must be done. Sid cracks the idea of holding a Beauty contests and soon all the leggy birds that 1973 could offer were swanning down to the sea-side Hotel owned by Joan Sims. And of course that's where the fun starts - a Hotel taken over by scantily-clad women being chased by dirty old men, etc. More fuel is added to fire by June Whitfield who plays a feminist assisted by a women who looks like a member of the Hitler Boy Youth (intentional, I take it). This is one of the funniest Carry On films, and one of the best to view.

Trivia

The film was a relative failure at the box office. The previous year, production had been scaled-back from two to one Carry On film a year. The film's failure led to the cancellation of the Carry On Christmas TV specials.

Quotes

Augusta Prodworthy: Is that you, Rosemary?
Rosemary: Yes.
Augusta Prodworthy: Have you seen this?
Rosemary: Yes - bloody disgrace! Still, what can you expect from a man?

Goofs

Sid chats to Ida Downs in the hotel reception area, Larry can be seen standing with his arms folded across his chest, next to Sid, staring directly at Ida. In the very next side angle shot Larry puts his hand to his mouth, but in the next forward shot he's back with his arms folded once again and so on.

Crazy Credits

The opening credits feature cartoon representations of beauty pageant entrants with puns for titles: Miss Conduct, Miss Represent, Miss Conception, Miss Hap, Miss Fortune, Miss Used, Miss Shaped, Miss Trust, Miss Handled, Miss Manage, Miss Placed, Miss Spent, Miss Stake, Miss Demeanour, and Miss Adventure. Each "beauty queen" is depicted in a manner befitting their name, for example Miss Conduct is behaving inappropriately with a judge, Miss Conception is pregnant, Miss Hap and Miss Fortune suffer wardrobe malfunctions, and so on.

Alternate Versions

As with many of the Carry On films the cinema version was cut by the BBFC to receive an 'A' (PG) certificate. Some dialogue was replaced, including 'knee trembler' (which was changed to 'snogging') and the fight between Hope and Dawn was reduced to remove shots of Hope attempting to pull Dawn's underwear off. The latter scene was fully restored in later video/DVD releases.
