A story about an English businessman in 1930s Germany who encounters a financier who has forged his career on greed, corruption, and opportunism, rather than the traditional British principles of decency and fair play.
Composer John Scott told in a 2016 interview conducted by Patrick Russ, that Bernard Herrmann wanted to score this movie, and when he found out Scott was, he felt this movie was taken away from him (he had never been asked), so Herrman went about spreading vicious rumors about Scott.
German characters all speak British English to each other and to the English characters, with one exception. A boatman talks briefly with Kate in German.
