Paul Schrader wishes he hadn't made ‘Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist’.The 78-year-old director helmed the controversial 2005 horror flick - which takes place before the events of the 1973 original - and now Schrader has admitted he never should have tackled the project because he doesn’t think he was “really suited” for the film.In an interview with MovieWeb, ‘The Card Counter’ director said: “I shouldn't have done it. It was not something I was really suited for.”Schrader - who has written some of Hollywood’s best thrillers like ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Rolling Thunder’ - added if he was presented with the chance to direct ‘Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist’ today, he would have turned it down.He continued: “I thought I could pull it off, but if I had that opportunity again, I would say, 'I think I will stick to what I do best.'”Schrader was...

Ralph Fiennes impresses as a doubtful cardinal tasked to find a new Pope in Edward Berger’s thriller. Here’s our Conclave review.
Filmmakers have a habit of telling stories about men of God having doubts. Films like Signs, Silence and The Exorcist have certainly engaged audiences through the years, but director Edward Berger takes a different approach to religion and the Catholic church with Conclave. Based on Richard Harris’ novel of the same name, Conclave exhibits doubt over the entire institution, which is a risky, bold stand to take for a big screen wide release feature.
Plot-wise, after the current pope suddenly dies, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked to arrange the eponymous conclave to choose a replacement. Several cardinals from all over the world shut themselves into a building to debate and vote for a new pope, but as it turns out, this lot of men are just...

The 1990s were a golden era for straight-to-video horror films. While these productions often had limited budgets and resources, they compensated with creativity, bold storytelling, and memorable scares. Here’s a countdown of just Some of the straight-to-video horror gems from that decade.
10. Ice Cream Man (1995)
Plot: A deranged ice cream vendor terrorizes a suburban neighborhood.
Why It’s Great: Starring Clint Howard in a wonderfully creepy performance, Ice Cream Man is a cult favorite that blends absurd humor with gruesome horror. Its mix of over-the-top kills and campy charm makes it unforgettable.
9. Ticks (1993)
Plot: Genetically engineered ticks wreak havoc on a group of troubled teens at a wilderness retreat.
Why It’s Great: With impressive practical effects and some genuinely disturbing moments, Ticks delivers gooey creature-feature thrills. Plus, it features a young Seth Green and an unhinged performance by Alfonso Ribeiro.

‘The Exorcist: Believer’ director David Gordon Green has encouraged newcomers to horror franchises to “invest all of themselves” into the series. The 49-year-old filmmaker handed the reigns to the demonic franchise to Mike Flanagan, 46, after he finished working on ‘The Exorcist: Believer’, and has now stressed filmmakers who board big, pre-established I.Ps need to fully embrace the responsibilities of helming such a popular series if they are to succeed.During an interview with MovieWeb, Green said: “I certainly want to encourage people to do it, but it's challenging because you want the filmmaker to invest all of themselves in that project.”Even so, the ‘Halloween Ends’ director added new directors like Flanagan should be mindful of looking after big cinematic series to ensure the franchise avoids any major backlash from fans, such as what was seen with 'Joker: Folie a Deux’.Green added: “When we're talking about bigger franchises that have legacies and fan bases,...

My Big Fat Fabulous Life star Whitney Way Thore certainly seems different from your average 40-year-old woman. Perhaps she’s fortunate that she never had a child who might have cringed mightily this weekend when the TLC star got fans asking what the heck was going on with her.
Whitney Way Thore Studied Theatre
Sometimes TLC fans forget that the My Big Fat Fabulous Life star studied theatre at the Appalachian State University. Of course, that could explain why she so often seems over-the-top in dramatic footage on the TLC show and on social media.
If life is a stage well Whitney Way Thore seems to intend to live it loudly, wildly, and with unashamed abandon. Not that My Big Fat Fabulous Life fans enjoyed seeing her prancing around in the ocean topless in the last season of the show. The TlC star does have a lot of loyal followers.

To mark the digital release of the acclaimed period horror film Fright on Prime, writer and director Warren Dudley reflects on the challenges/joys of indie filmmaking, his passion for football and what frightens him.
Your latest film, Fright, recently enjoyed a successful World premiere at FrightFest 2024, where it was compared to The Haunting and The Innocents. Describe what the occasion was like.
The entire Frightfest experience was the usual festival mix of nervous excitement and terror! It was the first time the cast and crew were seeing the film too so I was really hoping they would love how it turned out – and I think they did. The paying audience added even more pressure, being made up of seasoned horror fans who, by that point, had already watched around 25 films over the weekend so that was quite stressful.
However, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive from the audience and the Frightfest critics.

The first social media reactions for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu promised a creepy, gory and surprisingly sexy adaptation of the classic vampire tale, and this is reflected in the MPA's official rating.
Nosferatu has been rated R for “Bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content.”
Another press screening for the movie recently took place, and you can check out some new reactions below.
Bill Skarsgård genuinely is unrecognizable as Count Orlok in #Nosferatu. A transformative role, whose likeness is more obscured than ever by hair/ makeup/ prosthetics, vocal work & imposing physicality. Terrific stuff. Movie magic!

Recently it was announced that Mike Flanagan would be adapting Carrie for television. And I’m sure most of us are aware of the development hell that Crystal Lake (the Friday the 13th series) has been through, losing its showrunner amidst rumors of mismanagement. And we were very sad to see the Chucky series get canceled after three seasons. But it’s hard out there in the land of television and horror franchises haven’t exactly fared well there. Several years ago, Fox brought us The Exorcist TV series which had an incredible first season, fell off in the second, and was abruptly canceled.
The concept of a girl being possessed by a demon and saved by priests seems like a story that could theoretically work on television. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say that slashers do not tend to make for good television.

With a slew of excellent, critically acclaimed horror films in 2024, could awards bodies finally give them more consideration? A few thoughts.
Toni Collette in Hereditary. Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Elisabeth Moss in The Invisible Man. Mia Goth in Pearl. Christian Bale in American Psycho. Florence Pugh in Midsommar.
Horror films have long produced some fine, memorable performances, but they rarely tend to break through into the awards conversation. Or even if they’re talked about, they’re usually doomed to receive no love from the awards bodies themselves.
Why? Great question, and one that probably doesn’t have a simple answer. In general, horror films have been seen as trashy, low-brow forms of entertainment despite their long history of tackling social issues amid all the blood and guts. It’s only recently, with the rise of so-called “elevated horror” – anyone else hate that term? – that the genre’s reputation has started to slowly change.

The horror movie Heretic is one of the most prominent depictions of Mormonism in popular culture. One of the stars of the film was once a Mormon. Another was friends with Mormon missionaries while the movie was being filmed.
How ‘Heretic’ tried to explore Mormonism in an authentic way
Heretic is about a pair of Mormon missionaries: Sister Barnes (played by Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (played by Chloe East) who get kidnapped by a creep named Mr. Reed. Unlike other religious horror movies like Rosemary’s Baby or The Exorcist, Heretic contains a lot of dialog about religion and its role in society. While the film critiques all the major Abrahamic religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and various ancient paganisms, it saves most of its ire for Mormonism. Interestingly, the film isn’t exactly coming from outsiders.
The movie was directed by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. During a 2024 interview with GQ,...

The new horror movie Heretic delves into Mormonism more than any mainstream film to date. The directors of the film explained why they chose to explore that faith. They felt that it stood out from some of the world’s more established religions.
The directors of Hugh Grant’s ‘Heretic’ said Mormonism is uniquely new and American
Many horror movies focus on the darker aspects of Christianity, such as the devil himself. The genre wouldn’t be the same without religious horror films like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen. Heretic takes things in a new direction. It’s about a crazed atheist (played by Hugh Grant) who kidnaps a pair of Mormon missionaries to torture them. Heretic might be the first horror film centered on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rather than more popular forms of Christianity like Catholicism and Protestantism.

Robert Eggers has already made it clear that the Lily-Rose Depp you see onscreen in “Nosferatu” is all real: No CGI was used to enhance how physically and psychically mad she goes under the spell of demon-lover vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skårsgard).
But the writer/director revealed more details about her unhinged performance as Ellen Hutter in a Q&a for Academy members in New York over the weekend, moderated by “Tàr” and “Little Children” director Todd Field. Lily-Rose Depp, who already showed a willingness to stretch her bounds in terms of choreography on HBO’s glitteringly messy series maudit “The Idol,” helps turn this 19th century gothic “Nosferatu” into a story of female possession — which, as Eggers pointed out, was central to F.W. Murnau’s original film and Werner Herzog’s 1979 take, “Nosferatu the Vampyre,” which featured “Possession” star Isabelle Adjani (yet another movie this one will inevitably draw...

There’s nothing quite like Rv horror. Inspired by an expanding national highway system and the proliferation of motor parks in the 1960s, this distinctive subgenre offers a unique blend of classic genre fare. Part home invasion, part road trip tale, part hicksploitation with a smidge of folk horror, the recreational vehicle becomes a home away from home and offers the illusion of safety while traversing strange locales. Jack Starrett’s Race with the Devil is arguably the first great entry in the Rv horror tradition, a criminally underseen film following two suburban couples on a road trip to hell.
Friends and business partners Frank (Warren Oates) and Roger (Peter Fonda) have just set out on an adventurous road trip from San Antonio, Texas to a ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado. Robert Eggers puts another woman (Lily-Rose Depp) under assault in his sexy and frightening take on “Nosferatu.” The “Northman” and “The Witch” director first saw F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent vampire film when he was nine years old on a scratchy old VHS tape off a 16mm print, as he told moderator Guillermo del Toro at a DGA screening packed with Academy members and critics on Thursday night. Directors John Landis, Richard Kelly, and J.C. Chandor were among the attendees chatting up Eggers afterward.
“It had a magical quality,” said Eggers of the tape. “It stayed with me.” He went on to play Count Orlok in his own high school play of “Nosferatu,” and his background as a stage and production designer before becoming a feature director is on full display here.

When Andrew Garfield Reflects on His Spider-Man’s Potential Relationship with Iron Man, Differing from Tom Holland’s Portrayal! (Photo Credit – Facebook/Instagram)
Tom Holland didn’t just swing onto the screen as Spider-Man; he webbed himself into our hearts as the beloved character. Among many actors who played the iconic character, Andrew Garfield has been hailed as the best one who brought a slick and brooding charm to the character. While Holland’s portrayal as an endearing kid-next-door with perfect awkwardness blended with the superhero cool, it was all thanks to Sony when they decided to discontinue The Amazing Spider-Man series.

Will the Oscars answer “Conclave’s” prayers?
Edward Berger’s mystery thriller has been one of the buzziest films to emerge from the fall festivals. Adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, the film premiered at Telluride, where it received raves from attendees. Since then, its awards prospects have grown, especially following its Audience Award wins at the Mill Valley and Middleburg fests. Those regional accolades helped propel future best picture nominees such as “American Fiction” (2023) and “Belfast” (2021) and best picture winner “Green Book” (2018). “Conclave” has popular appeal, but will its religious themes be an advantage or a potential hurdle in the Oscar race?

Next week’s hyper-contentious election and its face-off between virulently opposed camps has cast a fearful pall over our culture, creating an atmosphere where political terrors are outdoing the movie versions. Why hasn’t someone made a slasher pic about volunteers canvassing door-to-door at dusk?
This uneasy vibe has foregrounded an uncomfortable truth about horror films: how they often come with subtle political messages that are not always subtle enough to obscure which way they might vote in November. (To be clear, films cannot cast votes in a presidential election.) For example, you could easily argue that one of the most blatantly Republican horror movies was The Exorcist, along with the entire satanic-possession genre. In William Friedkin’s 1972 original, science and modern medicine are completely powerless to dent the demon who has possessed the innocent victim, leaving it up to the patriarchal Catholic Church to take on Pazuzu (and forge...

Why The Exorcist Was Banned in Several Countries—The Controversial Details Explained! (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Horror movies are no strangers to scandal, but The Exorcist? It practically invented it. William Friedkin’s 1973 shocker set new standards for controversy, sending waves through theaters worldwide. With the story of a young girl possessed by a demonic force, the film’s shocking content stirred enough outrage to get it banned in parts of the U.K. That move only fueled its forbidden appeal, helping it rocket to box-office superstardom.
Unlike any horror film, The Exorcist played up the drama, diving into themes that religious groups considered beyond offensive. The producers knew the storm they were wading into and leaned into it. Playing off its reputation, it excited the marketing by encouraging stories of people fainting and even suffering heart attacks in the theater. Audiences were both captivated and horrified, and the film quickly amassed a cult following,...

All October long, Cracked is catching up with some of the greatest writers in Simpsons history to discuss the most beloved segments from the “Treehouse of Horror” series. From the cursed monkey’s paw to Krusto the Clown, we’re digging into the making of some real fan-favorites.
Here’s one more “The Simpsons did it first” moment for the pile: A month before Toy Story hit theaters, “Treehouse of Horror VI” featured a 3D Homer in the segment “Homer3,” an utterly mind-blowing feat back in 1995 and possibly the boldest thing the show had done up until that point.
Maybe more impressively, it was a feat pulled off by a couple of newbie showrunners, Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein. They’d written on The Simpsons for several seasons already, but “Treehouse of Horror VI” was just their third episode at the helm — an episode that went on to be a classic.

What’s it like to be the spine-chilling child in a scary film? In a Halloween special, we speak to the girl who played a demonic telepath in Village of the Damned – and the star of homicidal-virus shocker The Children
When Danielle Keaton was seven, her homework was to open her eyes as wide as possible and stare. She had just secured a role in director John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned – a horror film about inhuman psychic children with violent tendencies – and had to perfect her creepy glare. “We had to practise not blinking for a very long time,” says the actor and coach, now 38 and based in LA. “We would have to look in a mirror and hold the stare without laughing.” On set, the children would have staring contests with Superman star Christopher Reeve.

If there’s any genre in film that it’s easy to be a snob about, it’s horror.
I try really hard not to be, but it’s a challenge.
With decades of incredible films shaping my expectations, it’s sometimes difficult to love new movies in this niche.
(Neon Pictures/Screenshot)
And look, I’ve accepted that I’ll never get to experience watching The Exorcist for the first time again.
But over time, it got more and more difficult to find horror films that could truly rattle me.
And yet … I curated this list because 2024 has blown me away with its horror offerings.

Getting a film made is far easier said than done. That's why most Hollywood movies are based on pre-existing material -- both to try and speed up the process of generating a story itself, and to have some assurance that there's an audience for the story. This mentality has led to truly original movies becoming something of a rarity. Truth is, Hollywood has always looked to existing IP (intellectual property). What's new about today's situation is that the IP they're generally tapping tends to be of a short-form or experiential variety: either remakes, reboots, and legacy sequels to older movies, or TV shows, comic books, and video games.
In the early decades of cinema, however, the main source for adaptations was literature. Where comics, games, TV and other movies are all visual mediums and come pre-loaded with their own imagery, books are a covenant between the author and reader's imagination,...

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed…And he might still be following, as Stephen King has teased that there could be more books in his Dark Tower series on the way.
Taking to social media over the weekend, Stephen King posted an image of a t-shirt bearing a variation of the famous Dark Tower idea that “All things serve the beam.” Above that, he wrote, “I’m back in Mid-World…and the Territories. Don’t know if it will develop into anything–I never know–but it’s good to be back.”

Back in 2018, Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green had great success rebooting the long-running "Halloween" film franchise with a movie frustratingly just called "Halloween." The 2018 "Halloween" ignored every other sequel to come after John Carpenter's 1978 original, taking place in a world where Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was not the sister of Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney), and where Michael had been languishing in a mental institution for 40 years. That film spawned two sequels in its own miniature continuity, "Halloween Kills" in 2021 and "Halloween Ends" in 2022.
Blumhouse and Green were clearly hoping that lightning could strike twice, as Jason Blum infamously purchased the rights to "The Exorcist" in 2021 for $400 million. The plan was for Green to direct another reboot trilogy that also ignored all the extant sequels to date, catching up with the characters from the first film decades later. Sadly, the first film in this proposed trilogy, called "The Exorcist: Believer,...

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Blumhouse has unveiled insights into how Americans enjoy horror films throughout the year with a recent survey conducted by Sage Outcomes. They polled 3,000 participants to understand their preferences and habits concerning horror movies.
Interestingly, a substantial 44% of those questioned consider themselves hardcore fans of horror, indulging in the genre across all seasons, not just during the spooky times of Halloween. In contrast, a mere 6% reserve their horror movie watching for the Halloween season alone.
The study also highlighted how perceptions of the genre have evolved. 45% of respondents believe that horror films have gotten better over time.
This improvement is attributed to several factors: 49% credit enhanced production quality, 44% point to advancements in technology and special effects, and 39% appreciate the more original and creative ideas now prevalent in the genre.
A peek into the early horror experiences of fans shows that 52% started watching scary movies before they turned 12, often introduced by family members.

Horror maestro Mike Flanagan is going back to the Stephen King well for his next TV project. The “Life of Chuck” director is developing a series adaptation of “Carrie” for Prime Video, Deadline reports. Flanagan will serve as showrunner of the eight-episode horror series, which is assembling a writers’ room now.
“Carrie,” originally released in 1974, was King’s first published novel. Director Brian De Palma adapted it into a classic film in 1976, which became the first of dozens of adaptations of King’s books. The film stars Sissy Spacek as the title character, an abused teenager with telekinetic powers, and Piper Laurie as her cruel mother, both of whom received Academy Award nominations for their performances. One of horror's most famous and influential stories is receiving its most significant adaptation in years, and we couldn't possibly think of anyone more suited for the task. Mike Flanagan has made a career out of taking prolific author Stephen King's written words and spinning them into live-action gold, from 2017's "Gerald's Game" all the way to his well-received prequel to "The Shining" with "Doctor Sleep" in 2019. Along the way, Flanagan has also built himself a veritable television empire, debuting multiple spine-tingling limited series for Netflix in the span of just a few years. This latest news brings together the best of both worlds, as Deadline reports that Flanagan is setting his sights on a series adaptation of "Carrie" -- the very first (and arguably most daunting) of all of King's works.
According to the report, Flanagan will be spearheading an 8-episode series for Prime Video that will attempt...

Pop sensation and actor Lady Gaga is no stranger to the macabre. With her fierce love for all things gothic and horror-inspired, she’s brought dark and edgy elements to both her music and on-screen performances, like Lady Gaga’s unforgettable role in American Horror Story. Whether it’s her iconic meat dress or a performance with fake blood at the 2009 VMAs, Gaga has always embraced her love for the eerie. But which horror and thriller films rank as her personal favorites?
Gaga’s admiration for legendary director Alfred Hitchcock is no secret. In her hit song Bad Romance, she famously references three Hitchcock masterpieces: Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window. Her love for these films is deeply ingrained in her artistic identity.
In a 2015 interview on The Tonight Show, she even described thrillers and horror as calming for her, elaborating on her affection for the genre. This appreciation for Hitchcock extends to her music,...

Pop singer and actor Lady Gaga is no stranger to the horror genre, having starred in two seasons of Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story," and she's always been a fan of the creepier side of entertainment. After all, this is a woman who calls her fans her "Little Monsters," wore a dress made of actual meat, and had the world's coolest live performance at the VMAs in 2009 when she started pouring fake blood from her abdomen mid-song. Even her turn as a very different take on Harley Quinn in "Joker: Folie à Deux" is horror-tinged, and she has a fabulously fierce, fearsome sense of style that's clearly inspired by gothic and horror aesthetics, too. It's clear that Gaga loves horror, but which horror movies rank among her favorites?
