Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar
Spain, 1989
No matter if his protagonists are deranged or distraught, happy or sad, or if his stories are light or dark, comedic or tragic, the films of Pedro Almodóvar are usually at the very least enjoyable. Even at their most disturbing, there is something inescapably jubilant about his lavish use of color, his vibrant characters, and his unceasing passion for life and filmmaking. And when he aims to make something purely amusing, the results can be astonishing. It is for all of these reasons that Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, surprisingly the first Almodóvar film released by the Criterion Collection, is such a treat.
In this 1989 feature, made just after Almodóvar’s award-winning breakthrough Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Victoria Abril stars as junkie porn star turned respectable leading lady Marina Osorio, the object...

What get-up did you really love on the star?
With The Roomate hitting theatres on Feb. 4, Leighton Meester has been everywhere promoting her most recent flick — but luckily she has just enough time to change on Feb. 1, when she turned up wearing three different get-ups in NYC!
First, the star turned up to tape Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in a look I absolutely loved — an Emanuel Ungaro pre-fall 2011 sequined long sleeve floral mini dress. I thought she looked so stylish, finishing off the look with a pair of Pierre Hardy sandals.
For her next appearance, Leighton joined her co-star, Minka Kelly, at the Soho Apple store for a meet the actors event, where she opted for a chic yet edgy Giambattista Valli pre-fall 2011 color-block dress. While Leighton usually opts for very fashion-forward looks, it was nice to see her something a little more simple — yet still totally chic! She...

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.
