The background is well-known to Trekkies. Throughout the 1970s, "Star Trek" exploded in popularity. This was thanks largely to some sweet eternal syndication deals, which allowed the series to stay on the air pretty much in perpetuity. In the mid-'70s, "Star Trek" conventions were born, revealing to the world that there was a passionate, ultra-nerdy contingency of Trek fans willing to discuss and celebrate their pop obsession in public. It was at these conventions that series creator Gene Roddenberry opened an ongoing conversation with Trekkies as to what made his series so appealing. One could argue that it wasn't until these conversations that Roddenberry discovered the depth of his show, and the pragmatic philosophies of pacifism and diplomacy it represented.
It was in 1975 that Roddenberry began working on a "Star Trek" movie, although that early concept fell apart over some complex script issues. After that, Roddenberry began work on "Star Trek: Phase II,...

"Star Trek" was canceled in 1969 and then, 18 years later, the sequel series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" premiered. Reviving canceled shows is standard practice these days, when streaming services have all but replaced network TV and cable. However, the "Star Trek" renaissance was only possible thanks to a feature of that old model of TV: syndication, where a series would be sold for broadcast to multiple different channels.
In a 2007 oral history of "The Next Generation" by Entertainment Weekly, Robert H. Justman (a producer on what's now called "Star Trek: The Original Series") said that syndication reruns of "Tos" were why the suits were interested in a new "Star Trek" series. "[The reruns] just gathered up a whole slew of people who had never seen the show," Justman recalled.
That new "Trek" show ultimately became "The Next Generation." However, it was first conceived of in the late 1970s as "Star Trek: Phase II....

It's well known to "Star Wars" buffs that director George Lucas, when negotiating his contract with 20th Century Fox, insisted on keeping the "garbage rights" to the movie. In the mid-1970s, "garbage rights" referred to merchandising tie-ins like toys and lunchboxes. Although some movies had been successful with such merchandising in the past, no studio had ever made a notably substantial amount of money from them, hence the nickname. This move proved to be short-sighted for Fox and prescient for Lucas, as "Star Wars" kicked open the doors to a movie marketing bonanza that we are still experiencing to this day. "Star Wars" toys sold so quickly, that toy manufacturers had to sell empty boxes to fans while they produced more three-inch Luke Skywalkers. Once the toys were made available again, the boxes would be filled.
And while "Star Wars" might have kicked the door open in terms of marketing and toy manufacturing,...

The first Iron Man movie debuted in 2008 and introduced the world to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU brought a new, more contemporary style to the superhero genre, complete with slick outfits and high stakes. As a result, it attracted a large and appreciative audience. The MCU has become one of the most successful film and television franchises of all time, with box office receipts in the billions and a legion of devoted followers.
That said, Marvel’s Phase 4 has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for fans of the MCU. While some films and shows have been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, others have been met with mixed reactions. If there's a basic, no-frills definition for movies, it's that they're made to be seen. Cinema is a populist medium, attempting to reach as wide an audience as possible for as long as possible.
Perhaps that's why the feeling of "discovering" a movie can be so powerfully enjoyable. It gives you the sense, however false, that you're stumbling upon a secret piece of entertainment made just for you. If you happen to discover such a movie in the wee hours of the morning, so much the better — the surreal setting only serves to make what you're watching seem that much more unreal, richer, and special.
It's that sensation that the programming block on Turner Classic Movies known as "TCM Underground" sought to capture every Friday night-turned-Saturday morning. Begun by Eric Weber in 2006 and continued by programmer Millie De Chirico starting in 2007, TCM Underground made it its business to curate some of the most obscure,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe heads deeper into the uncharted territory of Phase IV, it's getting more meta than ever. First, there was the corny "Avengers" musical in "Hawkeye." Then, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" nodded to the popular multi-Spidey meme. Now, "Ms. Marvel" is about to take the meta references to a whole new level by introducing a superhero who loves, well, Marvel.

Behold, worthy Midgardians! Beamed directly across the Bifrost, the full-length trailer for “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
The Taika Waititi-helmed film is the only title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase Four” to center on one of the original Avengers. It comes hot on the heels of the House of Ideas’ spring hit “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and ought to tide comic book movie lovers over until late November when the world braces for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
“Love and Thunder” (which you can also call “Thor Four”) had caused a stir with early looks at Oscar-winner Natalie Portman’s bulked-up biceps, but this time we also got to see Christian Bale (yet another A-lister who has crossed between DC and Marvel films) as the very Voldemort-looking baddie Gorr the God Butcher.
Not that anyone should look for too much plot in these trailers but...

Created in 1976 by Jack Kirby, the Eternals were one of Marvel’s biggest cosmic swings. In Marvel canon, these god-like beings were given life by the Celestials and 10 of them were sent to Earth to keep an eye on things and make sure humanity was safe from the monstrous Deviants.
Now that the characters are set to receive their own film in Marvel’s Eternals, the 26th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some fans can’t help but wonder: where have these powerful protectors been for the previous 25 movies? The MCU has been a pretty chaotic place thus far. Near the end of the franchise’s Infinity Saga, Thanos uses the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe. That seems like it would have been a decent time for the Eternals to intervene. Well according to a sprawling new feature from EW, Marvel’s...

And just like that the blockbuster streaming era got a lot more complicated.
Black Widow star and longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe actress Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The claim alleges that her contract was breached when Disney released Black Widow on Disney+ in addition to its theatrical release.
According to Johansson’s representation, her contract guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release for Black Widow, which would be advantageous to the star given that she was set to receive a certain percentage of the film’s theatrical gross. The suit argues that by making the film available on Disney+, Disney was cutting her out of that opportunity.
“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit reads, in part.

It may have taken 23 films, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally celebrating a long-in-the-making milestone: the release of the first MCU film to be directed by a solo female filmmaker. After a series of delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” is finally hitting both theaters and Disney+ more than a year after its intended release date. As the first film in the franchise’s “Phase Four,” it’s both a crucial bridge between the 22 movies that came before, and a strong suggestion of what’s to come as the series branches further out.
Despite the film’s many release date delays, its prime new summer slotting comes with a small silver lining. Shortland’s film, though an outlier in the cinematic world — at least for now — arrives as Marvel is in the midst of a push into television series that includes a strong showing from female creators.

A version of this story about “WandaVision” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
You’d be hard pressed to find many shows that were more emblematic of the Covid era than Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision.”
The show focused heavily on dealing with grief and loss and was a self-described love letter to television. Not only that, “WandaVision” had the weight of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on its shoulders. It was unexpectedly the first project to launch the hugely popular franchise’s “Phase 4” and ended a pandemic-prolonged 18-month hiatus for the MCU after the mid-2019 release of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
We spoke about this with the show’s head writer, Jac Schaeffer.
TheWrap: How do you think themes of “WandaVision,” grief and loss, resonated even more considering the time the show aired in?

Disney and Marvel released a long teaser trailer for their third film in McU's Phase Four, opening November 5. The preview is filled with beautiful imagery thanks to newly crowned Academy Award®–winner Chloé Zhao. The story behind the Eternals has similarities to religious beliefs and past human-extraterrestrial contact. In the hands of Chloé Zhao, this should be interesting. So meet the Eternals played by a stellar cast.

It’s difficult to pin down the most exciting aspect of Marvel’s upcoming tentpole “Eternals.” Is it that it’s directed by newly minted Best Director winner Chloé Zhao, who seems to have been not just allowed, but encouraged to bring her trademark style to the film? Or that it features a star-studded cast that includes everyone from Angelina Jolie to Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry to Gemma Chan, and that’s literally just randomly picking and choosing from a cast list that zips off a dozen thrilling names before it even dips into “undisclosed role” territory (an MCU staple)? Maybe it’s just the giddy possibility of seeing a massive superhero movie in theaters for the first time in months?
Well, maybe it’s all of it, because while the MCU isn’t exactly known for taking chances, there’s something about “Eternals” that feels decidedly different. As...

The most sophisticated of the Disney parks where you can learn about Japanese culture, sample food from across the globe, and throw your refuse into a talking garbage can all in one trip. Epcot was the first area that Walt Disney had planned in what eventually would become Disney World, so it all began with a man, a mouse, and a plan for a creepy “utopian” society. Wait, what? “Disney is the place where dreams come true!!” I hear you shouting at your computer screen. Unfortunately, the place where dreams are free but the admission price is worth your kid’s college tuition began with a creepy fantasy to create a society that was all Disney all the time.

It’s a brand new month, and though it might seem like all hope is lost for 2020, at least streaming services have kept us occupied with plenty of stuff to watch. And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.
For starters, Buried is an underrated Ryan Reynolds thriller launching on the service today, and if you can manage to sit through an hour and a half of a film that takes place entirely within a coffin, you’ll find a hell of a riveting experience. This extraordinarily tense pic tells the story of an American civilian truck driver...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

Even though the entirety of Phase Four has been pushed back in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has left fans massively disappointed, the delay of all of their upcoming projects will only turn out to be a minor setback for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, with Phase Five sequels to Black Panther and Captain Marvel already announced, it seems clear that Kevin Feige knows exactly where the franchise is headed for the foreseeable future.
Phase Four is shaping up to be something of a soft relaunch for the long-running comic book series, with several of the key players that had anchored the franchise from the very beginning having rode off into the sunset. The future looks set to revolve around a mix of returning characters, then, like Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Ant-Man, and the arrival of many new faces including Shang-Chi and the Eternals.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is meticulously designed and planned years in advance to make sure that all of the pieces eventually fit together, and that strategy is what keeps bringing fans back for every installment, establishing the franchise as the biggest and most successful game in town in the process.
Even though the recently-delayed Black Widow is a prequel set directly after the events of Captain America: Civil War, headlined by a character that was killed off during the events of Avengers: Endgame, as the first installment in the studio’s Phase Four, Natasha Romanoff’s long-awaited solo outing is still set to put events in motion that will affect much of the McU’s upcoming slate.

Though the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to begin filming, director James Gunn is already receiving death threats from Marvel fans concerned that a certain fictional raccoon might soon meet a sad end.
Over on Twitter, for instance, the filmmaker received an ominous message from one of his followers:
“soon warning, if u kill the Rocket Raccoon in the guardians of the galaxy vol.3, You Will Die”
Sharing the tweet, Gunn responded with a tongue-in-cheek remark about the fleeting nature of existence:
“I’m also gonna die if I don’t kill Rocket Raccoon.”
It seems that Gunn is taking the warning in stride, even remarking in a later tweet that getting a death threat over a CGI raccoon is actually “more understandable than Some of the nonsense [he’s] received death threats over!” But when another follower clarified that the original message was implying he’d die...

We’re still more than nine months out from the release of The Eternals, but thanks to various set photos and leaks that have made their way online in recent weeks, we’re beginning to get a pretty good idea of the designs for some of the key players in Chloé Zhao’s upcoming film.
Over the weekend, for instance, a pair of low-quality stills that seem to offer an early glimpse at the movie’s promotional material have started making the rounds. Firstly, we have an image of Richard Madden’s Ikaris, seen dressed in what looks to be a fairly comic-accurate shiny blue suit, complete with three glowing holes across the chest.
One potentially significant detail in this image is Ikaris’ glowing hand, which seems reminiscent of the effect used on Captain Marvel whenever she goes binary. Only time will tell if Madden’s Eternal has some kind...

In the wake of this month’s Black Widow trailer release, several of Marvel’s biggest licensees have now unveiled the various merchandise they have lined up for the year’s first McU movie.
Among the tie-in toys that are soon headed for shelves is a Hasbro playset featuring the mask and shield of the film’s mysterious villain, Taskmaster, and if you look closely enough, some fans have speculated that you can spot signs of a connection to one Tony Stark.
Specifically, the mask’s visor seems to include a built-in Hud, much like the one used in Iron Man’s helmet. And while this alone is hardly enough to confirm a direct link to the McU’s first superhero, this certainly isn’t the first hint we’ve got that Taskmaster may be drawing inspiration from the stars of Marvel’s Infinity Saga.

Listen I have nothing against ants – rubber tree plants, veracity, etc – but put enough of them together and I get nervous. Radiate them? You get the big ass ones in Them! (1954). Delve into cosmic circumstance and you have the smarty pants overlords of Phase IV (1974). Throw a bunch on the television, make them poisonous and you end up with The Love Boat meets The Towering Inferno goofiness of Robert Scheerer’s It Happened at Lakewood Manor (1977), a pretty silly and damn entertaining TV flick.

Man vs. Nature never turns out well in horror; certainly nothing past the ‘50s terrors of looming lizards/shellfish caused by radiation/radiation. And while the ‘70s switched the vibe into eco-horror, the genre never lost sight of the nagging realization that when we push against the elements, they push back hard. So it is with Saul Bass’ Phase IV (1974), a weird and riveting sci-fi thriller that proves (as if it was needed) ants are way smarter than man.

Will Avengers: Infinity War signal the advent of Ronin?
That’s just one of the major Marvel-related theories currently gaining traction online, and Jeremy Renner has only gone ahead and fanned the flames of speculation with several cryptic Instagram posts in recent weeks. In fact, it’s all but confirmed at this point that Clint Barton will ditch his traditional superhero identity and instead become the masked, samurai sword-sporting Ronin. As fans will know, Barton’s switch is comic book accurate. He actually spent a fairly long stretch under that alias, serving as Ronin on the New Avengers and during the Skrull invasion.
As such, we should expect Barton’s new alter ego to stick around well into the McU’s Phase Four. This also leaves the door open for the character’s other comic book identities to appear at some point – Goliath, Golden Archer and even (for a brief period) Captain America.

We're gonna need a bigger Avengers.
The superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have bested quite a few villains over the last decade, but they'll soon face the biggest bad of them all -- Thanos the Mad Titan (played by Josh Brolin) -- in Avengers: Infinity War. Even though we still have 5 more movies left of Phase Three – including Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel – fans are already eager to find out what the next stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will consist of. With the ongoing plotline of the threat of Thanos set to be wrapped up soon, there were fears that the franchise might be ending. However, new comments guarantee that there’s a lot of life left in the McU yet.
While talking with Vanity Fair, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Marvel Studios has the rights to a mind-boggling 7,000 characters. It’s uncertain if he’s referring to separate properties or not, but it’s clear that the House of Ideas isn’t going to run dry anytime soon. And that’s even without the rights to the likes of X-Men and Fantastic Four.
Iger then went on to tease the direction that Phase Four might go in.

While chatting with Collider in a recent interview, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that he does know when the long-awaited news about Phase Four will finally arrive, but it’s not going to be for at least another two years, as the studio is committed to the next few films at the moment.

It wasn’t clear exactly what he meant at the time, but some new info from a key McU player might have just let it slip: there will be no major team-up movies from Phase Four onward.
While chatting with Collider, Josh Brolin – who’s played the Mad Titan Thanos across several movies since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy – gave some insight into Marvel’s plans for the future. The actor believes the studio found making Avengers: Infinity War and its as yet unnamed sequel such a logistical nightmare that they’re not planning to do it again after Avengers 4.
“I think that they’re in a position very openly and rawly where they’re like, ‘We would never do this again.

In a war film, what’s the difference between nasty exploitation and just plain honest reportage? André De Toth made tough-minded action films with the best of them, and this nail-biting commando mission with Michael Caine and Nigel Davenport is simply superb, one of those great action pictures that’s not widely screened. To its credit it’s not ‘feel good’ enough to be suitable for Memorial Day TV marathons.

Uniquely, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 included not one or two, but a whole five post-credits scenes. While half of them were inconsequential, comedic sequences, a couple teased important developments to come in Vol. 3.
As well as a promise that Adam Warlock would soon enter the McU, we also got a heavy hint that Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar and his team of Ravager captains would be returning for a major role next time around. Marvel comics fans will know that these characters are based on the original 1969 line-up of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The other day, GotG director James Gunn took to Facebook to commemorate the forty-eighth anniversary of the creation of the Guardians by sharing an image of the team’s original incarnation, featuring Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex and Yondu. As Gunn points, three out of the four have now appeared in the McU.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige caused a major stir recently when he made some ambiguous comments about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He talked of wanting the McU to have “a finite quality” and even teased that “all good things come to an end.” Of course, this got fans worried that the previously announced Phase Four might not happen, after all, and that the McU as we know it would close up shop.
Thankfully, another prominent filmmaker at Marvel Studios has now come forward to offer some context to Feige’s remarks. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Twitter to urge people to read the producer’s actual quotes and not the “static” that’s built up around them. He assured fans that, while Avengers 4 is “the end of one long story,” Phase Four will be “the beginning of another.”
