"James Bond" is mentioned when Shaft is seeing his weapons. A number of actors in this film have also appeared in the James Bond 007 films, Marne Maitland appeared in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Frank McRae appeared in Licence to Kill (1989), and Nadim Sawalha appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).

As of 2019, this is the only "Shaft" feature not directed by an African-American.

John Guillerman directed this film in 1973, the year prior to directing the Academy Award nominated Best Picture 'The Towering Inferno' (1974).

May very well be the first known instance of the use of the word "clitoris" in a film released by a major studio.

In this film, Shaft is almost killed by a man dressed in drag in a public men's room. The next year, 1974, James Caan had a very similar encounter in 'Freebie and the Bean' (Richard Rush, 1974.)

When this film fizzled at the box office, the John Shaft character was sold to television. The TV series lasted 7 episodes.
