During World War II, a Soviet veteran pilot teaches to newcomers that war is transient, and music is eternal.
The story is based in part on the memoirs of the Soviet fighter ace Vitaly Popkov who fought with a real-life "singing squadron" boasting own amateur choir. The squadron even toured the Soviet rear with concerts and received fighter planes built with money donated by Soviet star musicians.
