A nouveau riche, African-American family who move into a luxury apartment building develop close, if occasionally fractious, relationships with other tenants.
This show is the longest running spin-off of All in the Family (1971), outlasting its parent show, which ran for eight years, and then spun-off into Archie Bunker's Place (1979), whereas this show lasted for ten.

Numerous times on and off throughout the course of the series, people make a left when they leave through the exit of the Jeffersons' apartment.
