When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.
There were two three hundred-pound weights attached to Susan Backlinie that were being tugged by two groups of crewmen on shore. One group would pull right, and the other would pull left. It took three days to film that sequence.

The action in "Jaws" is supposed to take place during Fourth of July Weekend in New England. At that time of year the temperature in New England, during the day, usually ranges from the mid-70s to the mid-90s (Fahrenheit)...yet, with very few exceptions, the cast -including the extras-are wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, heavy jackets, wool hats, etc. They appear to be dressed for autumn weather, not summer weather.
The producers gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of The Nation Geographical Society and Mr. L.J.V. Compagno of the Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University.
Another cut scene shown in the DVD (and also spliced into the film in some TV versions) has a longer conversation between Brody and Cassidy before Chrissy's body is discovered. In this cut, Cassidy's attitude toward Chrissy's disappearance is much colder: when he says "She must've drowned," he shows no emotion at all, and he quickly goes into a casual conversation about his rent and bills.
