Production was delayed because of complex negotiations between the BBC and the copyright holders of Alexander Korda's aborted 1937 film version. This did, however, give the scriptwriter Jack Pulman more time to fine-tune his script.

In the miniseries, Julia's son Gaius dies of a mysterious illness before she is banished, and Lucius dies after being wounded in battle. Historically, Lucius died of a mysterious illness before Gaius died in battle, and both died before Julia was banished.
The show aired in 13 episodes on PBS in 1977, but was originally shown in 12 episodes in England, the first and second episodes having been combined. This is the version now available in the remastered edition on DVD.
