This was the first of the three terminally ill characters Jill Clayburgh played in her career, all for television movies. The others were in "Miles to Go" and "Reason For Leaving: The Jill Ireland's Story".
Although this film was made for television, it was so acclaimed that it was subsequently released to theaters. The theatrical release includes a title card explaining the reasons for its re-release, and also features an additional love scene between Jill Clayburgh and 'Peter Falk' in which Clayburgh briefly appears nude. (The nude scene, naturally, was absent from the original TV broadcast.)
