Tom Logan is a horse thief. Rancher David Braxton has horses, and a daughter, worth stealing. But Braxton has just hired Lee Clayton, an infamous "regulator", to hunt down the horse thieves; one at a time.
The film cast includes two Oscar winners: Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson; and two Oscar nominees: Randy Quaid and Frederic Forrest.
Regulator? Ain't that like a dry gulcher?
Lee Clayton: Well, that's not the softest term you could use, I'd say.
Tom Logan: Well, Regulator, correct me now if I'm wrong, isn't a regulator one of these boys that shoots people and don't never get near 'em?
Lee Clayton: That's it.
Cary gives a boy a dollar, and tells him to get some good whiskey and keep what's left. The boy returns with a glass of whiskey, but also returns the change.
The original UK cinema version was cut for a 'AA' (15) certificate by the BBFC to edit a sex scene, a shooting, a shot of a spike hitting a man's forehead, and blood dripping from a man's mouth. The cuts were fully restored in the 1987 video release, though the later 2004 DVD version was slightly re-edited owing to print damage.
