Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the ’70s, to give the film it’s full title, is a welcome and affectionate look at the Italian poliziotteschi films of the 1970s, films such as High Crime, Milano Calibro 9, Street Law and Napoli Violenta which, whilst heavily influenced by 70s Us cop and gangster films like Dirty Harry and The Godfather, also touched upon real Italian issues – the Sicilian Mafia and the Red Brigade – and amped up the sex and violence to often ridiculous levels.
Those film fans familiar with Italian genre cinema will know that Italian cinema has a reputation of hitching itself to the nearest bandwagon and bleeding it dry. If Italian filmmakers could find a fad that people liked they’d stick with it. From...

Next Monday sees the home entertainment release of Underworld Blood Wars, the fifth film in the ever-evolving franchise which has taken over $500million at the box office and spawned a number of multimedia spin offs. Our review of Blood Wars called it ‘the best in the series’ and there are plans for another film, with series figurehead Kate Beckinsale back as Selene. Underworld as a franchise has never been in better shape.
The turn of the century presented a number of challenges for movie studios. In the subsequent seventeen years we have seen many movie genres and their various tropes reborn for the twenty-first century. The Zombie movie has picked up the pace with 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland and the TV series Dead Set and The Walking Dead. Likewise the Vampire and Werewolves had a new day in the sun thanks to 30 Days of Night,...

While many may scoff when I say this, let me just go ahead and admit right here that I unabashedly love the Underworld movies, a series I once referred to as the “Lord of the Rings of Werewolf Movies.” The first Underworld came along right at the perfect time for me. I was still super into horror action cinema at the time (coming off films like Blade and The Matrix, whose influences were being felt industry-wide), and I just couldn’t think of anything cooler than watching werewolves and vampires kicking each other’s respective otherworldly asses.
Other than the films’ tendencies to sometimes take themselves just a little too seriously, I've always felt like the Underworld movies have unjustly received a bad wrap within the horror community and deserve far more love and respect than they ever get. From their commitment to creating intricate character-driven storytelling that has taken us through (now) five films,...

★★★☆☆ If the titles Milano Calibro 9 (1972), Street Law (1974) and Napoli Violenta (1976) mean anything to you, then you might want to check out Mike Malloy's new doc Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the '70s (2012), which affectionately documents Italy's decade-long love affair with the cop film genre. The film explores exactly why Italian directors suddenly started churning out this style of exploitation cinema and also what the public found so appealing about it.

Underworld is...Underwhelming Kate Beckinsale is back as the vampire death dealer Selene in the latest chapter of Underworld. The story picks up after the end of Underworld: Evolution. Selene and Michael head into hiding, but the world has changed drastically. Humans know of the existence of both species and begin “the cleanse.” That is where the story goes wrong. The government begins going door to door and wiping out both vampires and Lycans (werewolves). Selene is captured and frozen for twelve years. The question everyone asks is, where’s Michael? We will answer it and you might not like the answer you get. Selene awakes and finds that she and Michael have a hybrid daughter and the running begins. We get introduced to some new characters. David, a vampire caught up in the legends of the Death Dealers and a human detective. They along with Selene set out to...

Long before "Twilight," there was one vampire vs. werewolf franchise that stood above all others: "Underworld."
Launched by Len Wiseman -- a former music video director and protégé of Roland Emmerich who would go on to helm the fourth "Die Hard" and the "Total Recall" remake -- these action-horror hybrids take a few cues from the "Blade" and "Matrix" films to create their own unique blend of B-movie bliss.
On the eve of the fourth film, "Underworld: Awakening," we're giving you a quick primer on all the things that go bump in the blue-tinted night and look sexy doing it. Of course, it goes without saying that this guide will feature Spoilers galore, so consider yourself duly warned.

Our favorite vampire warrior, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), returns after a 12-year slumber to face a new enemy—mankind—in Underworld Awakening, the fourth film in the enduring series about an ancient war between Death Dealers (vampires) and Lycans (werewolves). Underworld: Awakening is the first film in the franchise to be filmed in 3D and captures Selene at her most ferocious. It is arguably the most exciting Underworld yet, but before you dive into this action-packed gothic soap opera you'll need to know who's who in the Underworld universe. The third film in the series, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, is actually the first chronologically and should be watched first to better understand the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their...

It’s been a few years since we had a new Underworld flick (the last was Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – which was a prequel with Rhona Mitra taking over for Kate Beckinsale), but apparently someone out there still likes these movies, so here’s the first trailer for the latest installment, the imaginatively titled Underworld: Awakening. If you’ve seen one Underworld film, you’ve basically seen them all – and this newest entry looks to continue that trend. All the important points are covered: everything shot with a hazy blue filter? Check. Kate Beckinsale in a skintight black bodysuit? Check. Gibberish about Death Dealers and Lycans? You betcha. Crazy The Matrix-esque action scenes? It’s in there. We couldn’t even begin to guess how this...
