During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment released the newest trailer "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," based on the world of the Mario video game franchise. We haven't seen a Mario Bros. movie since the monstrosity (I say that with love) that was the 1993 live-action "Super Mario Bros.", and before that, the Japanese anime film "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" from 1986.
This time around, we have Chris Pratt voicing the diminutive Italian plumber instead of voice actor Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario, his brother Luigi, and so many other characters since 1992. (Martinet will reportedly lend his voice in a cameo role in this movie.) As for the plot, we know the kingdom of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and many others (including the penguins we saw in the teaser trailer) are in trouble. Bowser (Jack Black) is trying to take over all the galaxies,...

Bow down to Princess Peach. On Tuesday, Illumination released the second trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie and gave a first look at both Mario’s silly, long journey to face Bowser, along with Anya-Taylor Joy slaying her role as Peach and Seth Rogen taking on Donkey Kong.
“There’s a huge universe out there. With a lot of galaxies,” Peach tells Mario to end the trailer, referencing the 2007 Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. “They’re all counting on us. No pressure!”

Two generations of A Star Is Born collided at Glastonbury Friday when, according to Billboard, Bradley Cooper appeared on stage to shoot scenes before a set from Kris Kristofferson. Cooper—who is also directing the remake starring Lady Gaga—is playing a role equivalent to the one that Kristofferson took on in the 1976 version of the story. (If only James Mason and Frederic March could have been around to see this.)
Cooper appeared to jammed out pretty hard—as you can see from the photo above—but NME notes that the audience could not hear what he was playing. The actor masterfully photobombed Pitt as he took a selfie with a fan, musician Chris Simmons, at the 2017 Glastonbury Festival in England Friday. British rock band Royal Blood also posted on Instagram a photo with Pitt, joking that he was a fan who had won a meet-and-greet contest. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were spotted filming the musical remake A Star Is Born in California on Monday, and let's just say that there appeared to be some serious fireworks between their characters. The singer and Golden Globe winner, who debuted her new Summer anthem "The Cure" at Coachella last weekend, and the actor, who recently became a dad, packed on the Pda while shooting a scene at a gas station. RelatedLook Back on Lady Gaga's Monstrous Rise to Fame In the film, Bradley plays the role of an alcoholic has-been rock star, and Gaga a small-town girl hoping to make it big - a part most famously portrayed by Barbra Streisand in 1976. The pair was first photographed taking a ride on Bradley's motorcycle back in April 2016, launching rumors of a professional (or personal) relationship. In October, when Gaga served as the musical guest on SNL, the actor...

Something I've touched on many times before is that the accounting offices over at Warner Bros. deserve a closer look. If you follow box office analysis like I do, you'll come across experts in the field making claims like Harry Potter And The Order of The Phoenix actually Lost money for the studio, despite earning $938 million worldwide (I'll include a link to that in the Source). You'll also hear about the idea that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice needed to make something like $900-$920 million in order to be profitable, meaning the $827M it made actually leaves Warner Bros. in the red!

Controversial producer Jon Peters suggests he made tens of millions on Man of Steel while Christopher Nolan banned him from the set.
Jon Peters has had one of the most infamous and oddly-inspiring rises to power in Hollywood history. Once a hair-dresser bad boy who was supposedly the inspiration for Warren Beatty’s Shampoo, Peters somehow found himself as Barbara Streisand’s lover/producer on the A Star Is Born remake, and then a well-regarded producer who, along with Peter Guber, presided over classic 1980s blockbusters like Batman, Flashdance, and An American Werewolf In London. He also was the first guy to attempt to 'reboot' Superman before that jargon existed in the 1990s… mind you, his idea was to have Nicolas Cage with flowing locks to star in it while fighting a giant spider, but you know… he was still first.

Only a few celebrities can truly claim the title of “living legend,” and indisputably near the top of that list is Barbra Streisand. This is a woman who completed her Egot (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) within six years of starting her career, who’s conquered stage and screen and who continues to sell out tours at age 74. Barbra Streisand is set to direct a biopic of 18th century Russian empress Catherine the Great from Kristina Lauren Anderson's Blacklist-topping script. It would be Streisand's fourth dramatic feature, and first since 1996's "The Mirror Has Two Faces." (The others are 1983's "Yentl" and 1991's "The Prince of Tides.") Produced by Gil Netter ("Life of Pi," "Sea of Trees"), the project focuses on perhaps the most powerful woman in Russian history: Catherine ruled the Russian Empire from 1762 to her death in 1796, a period sometimes referred to as the "Golden Age" of Russian nobility. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film's plot follows "a young, sensual Catherine trapped in an abusive marriage" who "utilizes her intelligence, fortitude and passion to rise to power." Oscar winner Streisand (Best Actress in 1969 for "Funny Girl"; Best Song in 1977 for "A Star Is Born") most...

A forgotten gem of the late 1970s comes to Blu-ray for the first time, Frank Pierson’s adaptation of the novel King of the Gypsies. Notable for several reasons, namely as the credited debut for actor Eric Roberts and a star studded cast packed to distraction, this is the kind of pulp oddity often whisked off the shelves of the bestseller list for glossy cinematic reinterpretation. This gypsy saga was based on a novel by Peter Maas, better known as the biographer of Serpico, which resulted in the novel inspiring Sidney Lumet’s classic 1973 film starring Al Pacino. Eventually, Maas’ works, often revolving around sensational true crime treatments, would be adapted mainly for television (including the 1991 Valerie Bertinelli Lifetime film, In a Child’s Name), and this sometimes outlandish antique feels like an exaggerated heirloom in the Harold Robbins’ vein (The Carpetbaggers; The Betsy; The Adventurers), a frumpy comparison...

Bradley Cooper is reportedly in talks to make his directorial debut on the long in the works remake of the musical "A Star Is Born" at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The story follows a movie star who helps an aspiring young actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.
Clint Eastwood, who helmed "American Sniper" which starred Cooper, was attached to the project for several years alongside Beyonce Knowles in the female lead, however both have since moved on.

'No Good Deed' movie going unpunished to top weekend box office? (photo: Idris Elba in 'No Good Deed') Apologies for the bad wordplay above, but if Friday estimates are a reliable indicator, No Good Deed should indeed go unpunished to the top of the domestic box office this weekend, September 12-14, 2014. But why "unpunished"? Well, so far the Sam Miller-directed thriller starring four-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba (Luther) and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has a downright putrid 10% score and 2.6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics. Sony Pictures, whose subsidiary ScreenGems is distributing No Good Deed, reportedly opted to skip late Thursday screenings to ensure that the film's plot twist would be kept under wraps. More likely, however, it was the critics' derisive remarks that Sony wanted under wraps. For instance: "The final plot twist...

Horror legend Robert Englund talks about his new film The Last Showing, what was wrong with the Nightmare On Elm St remake, and more...
Sitting with Robert Englund deep in the bowels of a gilded London hotel, it becomes obvious just what a great storyteller he is. As he reminisces about his early acting career in such films as Five Easy Pieces or Hustle, or goes even further back to his childhood brushes with the horror genre, he talks in a soothing, sonorous voice that is a million miles away from his signature role of Freddy Krueger.
Then again, Englund doesn't look or sound like the character in his latest movie, either. In The Last Showing, a psychological horror thriller written and directed by the UK's Phil Hawkins, Englund plays Stuart, a once proud projectionist who, thanks to the advent of digital cinema, finds himself busted down to the lowly...

Kris Kristofferson is 77 and still acting, out promoting his new independent film, The Motel Life, in which he has a supporting role alongside Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff. But the longtime musician, who is being honored with a month-long tribute in the Cinefamily film, Kris Kristofferson: A Cowboy in Hollywood, also reveals to FOX411 a growing struggle with memory loss. "I wish my memory weren't so bad," Kristofferson said. "They tell me it's from all the football and boxing and the concussions that I got. A couple of years ago, my memory just started going. But I can remember my songs,...

Needham in 1980.
Stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham has died from unspecified causes at age 82. Needham had a long history as one of the best stuntmen in feature films and television before he moved into directing movies. Needham's films were hardly the stuff of art house theaters. He specialized in testosterone-packed action sequences designed to appeal squarely at male audiences. Along the way, he was also credited with developing methods that reduced the risk for the many stuntmen who populated his films. Needham made his directorial debut in 1977 with Smokey and the Bandit starring his old friend Burt Reynolds. Critics scoffed at the cornball humor and endless car stunts and the film laid an egg in urban play dates. However, it resonated with its intended audiences in rural areas and eventually the grosses brought to blockbuster status. The movie not only cemented Reynolds as a genuine superstar but gave new life to the...

One of Hollywood’s most famous stuntmen and the writer-director of Smokey And The Bandit died this morning. Hal Needham, who received an Honorary Oscar this year, was 82. The co-founder of Stunts Unlimited performed and/or coordinated stunts for hundreds of films and TV shows during his long career. He also pioneered a number of technical gadgets that furthered the art — and safety — of Hollywood stunt work, including the high-fall air bag, the air ram, the car cannon turnover and Shotmaker Elite camera car and crane, for which he won a Scientific Oscar in 1987 and an engineering Emmy three years later. The Memphis native and Korean War paratrooper was Richard Boone’s stunt double on Have Gun — Will Travel from 1957-63 and also worked on such classic series as Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and Mannix. By the mid-’70s, Needham was focusing mostly on movies, working...

Marta Heflin, the niece of the Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin and an accomplished actress in her own right, died Sept. 18 after a lengthy illness, according to a paid obituary in The New York Times. Some films offer one an instant cheer-up and others speak to that gloom that we feel at certain ages and times. If I watch Pyaasa every afternoon, then Kagaz Ke Phool would be for each weekend since it envelopes this viewer into a sighing and sniveling wreck. The film is one of the rare cases where its trivia and history cloud the film as a whole due to its eerie significance in Dutt’s trajectory. You cannot talk of the film without looking at the overlap and meta-ness of the narrative’s role in Dutt’s filmmaking oeuvre. The film broke Guru Dutt’s heart with its commercial failure of which he never directed another film after, sticking to acting and writing for his other protégé’s projects Sahib, Bibi, aur Ghulam and Chaudvin Ka Chand.

At five-foot-two, musician-actor Paul Williams is admittedly a diminutive presence. But in profession, the songwriter behind “We’ve Only Just Begun,” The Muppet Movie’s “Rainbow Connection,” and even The Love Boat’s theme song is a bona-fide titan. (Upon receiving an Oscar for Best Original Song -- for 1976’s A Star Is Born theme “Evergreen” -- he famously quipped alongside its star Barbra Streisand, “I was going to thank the little people....”) His rich legacy was not lost on French electronic duo Daft Punk, who recruited the 72-year-old to contribute lyrics and vocals to “Touch”

Aashiqui 2
Starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shradha Kapoor
Directed by Mohit Suri
Rating: *** ½
It’s no coincidence that this surprisingly moving film is inspired by Frank Pierson’s 1976 drama A Star Is Born. And I deliberately mention the funky psychedelic 1976 version and not the older 1954 version of the same story. In spirit and in the way the two principal actors perform their parts of two soul-mates and singers torn asunder by their allegiance to the same competitive spirit of showmanship, Aashiqui 2 is robustly reminiscent of the Kris Kristofferson-Barbra Streisand film where he discovers a co-singer who steals his heart and also his career.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee made his lyrical melodious Abhimaan on the same theme. It was easy for Hrishida to portray Jaya Bhaduri as a better artiste than Amitabh Bachchan quite simply because she sang in Lata Mangeshkar’s voices. In Aashiqui 2 the two protagonists are...

Barbra Streisand's career has spanned many, many decades, and she's clung fiercely to her identity through them all. With several Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards to her name -- not to mention a slew of other highly regarded prizes and nominations -- Streisand is a rare member of the "Egot" club. In fact, she holds the high honor of being the first woman to simultaneously direct, produce, write and star in a Hollywood film ("Yentl"). It's no surprise Streisand inspires us all.
Born and bred in Brooklyn, New York, the multi-hyphenate got her start performing in New York City's gay nightclub scene. Streisand's acting career kicked off with 1968's "Funny Girl" and 1973's "The Way We Were," and 1976's "A Star is Born" encapsulated her trajectory perfectly. As the singer solidified her acting career, she developed a rabid fan following.

Monday night, the Film Society at Lincoln Center in NY pays homage to Barbra Streisand for their 40th annual Chaplin Award Gala, which follows her recent performance of "The Way We Were" during the In Memoriam segment on the Academy Awards telecast. Streisand, most recently onscreen in "The Guilt Trip," is one of few entertainers who have "Egot"-ed: she won two Oscars (Best Actress for her screen debut in "Funny Girl" and Best Song for "A Star is Born") despite having appeared in just 20 films, five Emmys, eight Grammys and a Tony. Last year's Chaplin Award recipient was Catherine Deneuve. She also directed the underappreciated "Yentl," which the Film Society is trying to make up for now. Streisand answers Nyt reader questions here. While Streisand needs no introduction, take a look back at her legendary career with clips below.

Barbra Streisand falls for Omar Sharif in Funny Girl.
Legendary superstar Barbra Streisand (A Star is Born) stars in her Academy Award-winning role of famed performer Fanny Brice in the 1968 romantic musical biography Funny Girl, on Blu-ray for the first time and exclusively available at Amazon.
In her first starring film, Streisand recreated her Tony Award-nominated Broadway role for Hollywood giant William Wyler (Ben-Hur), playing the comedienne in a story that contrasted Fanny’s comic onstage antics with her dramatic offstage romance with that gambling nogoodnik Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif, Lawrence of Arabia).
Also featured in the cast are Kay Medford as Fanny’s mother, Anne Francis as a Ziegfeld showgirl, and Walter Pidgeon as legendary Broadway showman Florenz Ziegfeld.
The film’s many memorable songs—penned by Jule Styne (music) and Bob Merrill (lyrics)—include “Don’t Rain on My Parade,...

Hopefully, Oscar is ready for Seth MacFarlane, because MacFarlane sounds ready for him.
The "Family Guy" creator and "Ted" director and co-writer will live the dream of many a film fan by serving as host of this year's Oscars, as ABC airs the Motion Picture Academy's 85th ceremony Sunday, Feb. 24, from Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
Since being named by first-time Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Smash") as a surprise choice for the job, MacFarlane has become an Oscar nominee as well: He's up for writing the lyrics to the "Ted" song "Everybody Needs a Best Friend."
"In general, we're trying to make this a more ubiquitous Oscars," MacFarlane tells Zap2it. "I think that a lot of times, there's pressure to keep everything about the movies that are nominated that year. While that is a big part of this, we're also trying to find...

Ever since being forced to watch Yentl as a young boy in elementary school (where I laughed so loud, my teacher turned the film off), I've avoided Streisand on screen. I'll never be able to remove the image of her singing/shouting "Papa!? Can you hear me!!??" from my brain.
Kristofferson on the other hand, I actively seek out. You understand my quandary here? A star I actively go out of my way to avoid with another I'm drawn to. It's a pickle.
And for those keeping score, I don't really enjoy romances. A Star is Born doesn't feature Joely Fisher's remarkable cleavage, after all. My knowledge of A Star is Born is limited to knowing that Clint Eastwood wanted to remake it with Beyonce in the lead role. But who would play Gary Busey's part? That's what I'd wanna know. That would be the 4th time A Star Is Born...

MacFarlane and Chenoweth to perform in musical number at the 85th Academy Awards Kristin Chenoweth and 2013 Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane will be featured in a closing musical number, the show's producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have announced. The Academy's press release quotes the Oscarcast producers as saying that the musical number is a "'can't miss' moment." (Another apparent such moment would certainly have been James Franco singing in drag at the 2011 Oscar ceremony; however, Franco's number was axed by the Powers That Be.) [Picture above: Kristin Chenoweth up close and personal on the red carpet of the 80th Academy Awards.] Besides Chenoweth and MacFarlane, the performers at this year's ceremony, which features an homage to James Bond and to recent Hollywood musicals, include the following: Chicago's Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dreamgirls' Jennifer Hudson, much of the Les Misérables cast (Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Russell Crowe, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit, and Helena Bonham Carter -- but not Sacha Baron Cohen); Skyfall's Adele,...

When I ultimately seize control of the universe, which is, of course, an integral part of my five-year plan, there will be a special section of Hell reserved for Barbra Streisand. There’s a smug sense of superiority about everything she does that rubs me the wrong way, and she’s nowhere near as talented as she gets credit for. Babs can sing, I’ll give her that, I just hate every song she chooses to belt out—with the exception of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” but that’s only due to the involvement of that most fantastic gentleman Neil Diamond. Watching her try to act, however, is physically painful. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, and the true nature of my feelings are out in the open, I tried as mightily as I’m able to give the Blu-ray Book release of “A Star Is Born...
