Homophobia was rife in the 80's, sorry to say.
I want to respond to the comment by 'Vintage T.V. Addict' who claimed that stereotypical depictions of homosexuality had ended by the 80's. This is untrue. Did he not see 'Allo, Allo'? The British press was extremely hostile to gays, particularly when the AIDS crisis broke and there were calls for homosexuality to be made illegal once again. On top of that over-the-top camp comedians such as Duncan Norvelle were very popular with the public.
