Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review), playing in theaters now. The sequel blends the old with the new, including relocating the lethal terror to Mexico. Bloody Disgusting spoke with director Kevin Greutert and production designer Anthony Stabley about how the Mexico setting informed the traps and new batch of survivors.
Watch the video interview below, where Stabley reveals what mythology he drew from when creating the production design, and how actor Paulette Hernandez‘s intensity set the bar high for the scenes that followed.
Director Kevin Greutert, the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.
Director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan and Leigh Whannell and have been with the franchise the entire way.
With nearly twenty years of franchise lore, history, and experience with Jigsaw and his gnarly traps under their belts, few know Saw quite like Burg and Koules.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the tenured producers about Saw X and how much input they have on John Kramer’s lethal traps.

We ended last week with the first-ever clip from Lionsgate’s forthcoming Saw X, which gave us our first extended look at one of Jigsaw’s new devices – the eye trap!
The surprise with this contraption is that the game is actually connected to the character’s fingers, snapping them back with each turn of a dial. With the clip came a brand new image that gives a nice and clear look at Jigsaw’s menacing game, which appears to have already snapped three of the “victim’s” fingers.
“John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back for the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s final games.”
“Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable.

“I’d like to play a game. Perhaps one that addresses those ‘sticky’ fingers of yours,” Jigsaw exclaims in the very first clip from Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
In the clip, a man wakes up strapped to a chair. There’s a device clamped around his eyes and some sort of mechanics attached to all of his fingers. John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), identifies this man as a hospital custodian and offers him 60 seconds to complete this “game” or he’ll lose his eyesight – and maybe his life. When he turns the dial, a finger is cranked back, breaking it instantly. What happens to his eyes when he fails?!

The Mayan calendar-inspired art is Loaded with references to the franchise’s past, suggesting that the new movie aims to be a truly satisfying full circle moment for the saga.
What we already know about Saw X is that it’s set between the events of Saw and Saw II, with both Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith returning to play Jigsaw and Amanda Young.
But what exactly does Lionsgate mean when they say the movie “cuts through time”? The franchise has been known to play around with its own timeline in the past,...

Coming to theaters on September 29, tenth franchise installment Saw X celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise with a direct sequel to the original classic. Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw, who is still very much alive at this stage on the timeline, and director Kevin Greutert promises in a new chat with Empire that he takes center stage this time around.
“Kramer is the centre of the story,” Kevin Greutert tells Empire, who goes on to explain that Saw X will feature John Kramer aka Jigsaw “more than in any other Saw.”
Greutert elaborates, “[Saw X] is an emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer, and less a slaughterhouse that you experience from the point of view of the victims.” He also notes during his chat with Empire, “Obviously there will be people that can’t handle it, but I think it has a good chance of...

The Saw franchise returns to the big screen in less than one month with brand new movie Saw X, the events of which take place between the original Saw movie and its first sequel.
Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith both return for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
The film has been officially rated “R” by the MPA this week for…
“Sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use.”
It’s interesting to note that the MPA listing for Saw X lists Jigsaw 2 as an alternate title for the film. Given the new movie is very much a Jigsaw-centric tale, that seems fitting.
The cast for Saw X also includes Renata Vaca (“Midnight Family”), Paulette Hernandez (“Crown of Tears”), Joshua Okamoto (“Control-z”), Octavio Hinojosa (Come Play With Me), Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman) and Michael Beach (Dahmer).

The official trailer for Saw X debuted over the weekend, officially confirming that Shawnee Smith will be back as franchise villain Amanda Young in the upcoming movie.
This morning, Lionsgate has released another brand new sneak peek at Saw X, giving us a fresh look at Amanda’s return. How is Amanda Young still alive, you ask? Well, the upcoming Saw X is a direct sequel to the original Saw, meaning it takes place before the events of Saw II. It wasn’t until Saw III, you may recall, that Amanda and Jigsaw were both killed off.
Smith’s Amanda started out as a survivor of one of Jigsaw’s early traps, ultimately becoming an accomplice to the torturous madman – and as a result, a horror icon in her own right.

Variety reported a couple days ago that our friends at FilmSharks in Buenos Aires continued their winning ways this week, selling more rights for Latin American genre titles to more territories. On top of selling the rights for Ghosting Gloria and Come Play With Me to Korean distributors FilmSharks earlier this week they also sold the rights for the Argentine thriller Virtual Reality and Brazilian horror thriller Macabre. Virtual Reality has found a home in Korea with the same company that got the right for Come Play With Me earlier this week, Laon-i Distribution. Some news earlier this week from our friends at FilmSharks in Buenos Aires. Deadline reported that the sales company locked in deals with Korean distributors for the Uruguayan spiritual rom-com Ghosting Gloria and for the Mexican horror flick Come Play With Me, directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano. Ghosting Gloria had its world premiere at Fantasia this Summer. It was, cute, like if Rob Reiner directed Ghost. Come Play With Me premiered on home turf at Morbido and was quickly scooped up and made available on Amazon Prime here in the Americas. FilmSharks has also sold the remake rights for Ghosting Gloria to Korea, the U.S. and Mexico. They are currently negotiating Spanish remake rights. ...

Buenos Aires-based sales and production company FilmSharks International has scored a number of deals with South Korea, France and Italy in recent days.
South Korean indie film distributor Bluelable Pictures picked up all rights to erotic thriller “Bandit Love” and plans a wide theatrical release. The company acquires six-to-seven films for Korea annually, and last year made a deal for four Celine Sciamma movies after the success of Portrait Of A Lady On Fire in the territory.
Rud also told Deadline he is in talks for remake deals on the Uruguayan production for Korea, the U.S. and Mexico, while a Spanish remake agreement is set to be signed.

Cinema Retro: How did you begin this lifelong quest to tell Mary Millington’s story? When did you first discover her?
Simon Sheridan: I’m not sure I can tell you this story! I was a curious schoolboy. I happened upon some porn mags when I was a young boy. It wasn’t in a bush, but someone...

As a movie, “Promising Young Woman,” the debut feature from “Killing Eve” writer/director Emerald Fennell out April 17 via Focus Features, defies easy categorization. Anchored by a star turn from Carey Mulligan, the film blends equal parts thriller and pitch-black comedy with occasional dashes of traditional rom-com and ‘90s noir drama structures. It’s all told through the unique, stylized lens of Fennell, who navigates the viewer through a unique take on post-#MeToo society.
The film’s eclectic mix of genres with a strong female perspective will also be at the forefront of its official soundtrack, due April 3 via Capitol Records. The album will feature eight all-new songs created for the film, including four covers and four original songs. Two of the album’s originals are written and performed by Cyn, whose first single and video from the project, “Drinks,” was released Friday (March 6.) The “Drinks” video, directed by Taylor Fauntleroy,...

While Jaws and Star Wars spawned the blockbuster, groundbreaking film-makers pushed cinema to the limits with edgy drama and sparkling comedy
First, the bad news. The 1970s found Hitchcock and Lean waning, Michael Powell a pariah and Pasolini beaten to death. Disaster movies were falling from the skies. Jaws and Star Wars gave birth to the modern blockbuster, bestowing undue weight for ever on the words “opening weekend”. In Britain, the mackintoshed masses made mega-hits out of the Confessions and Adventures sex comedies. The dismal softcore romp Come Play With Me ran for four years straight.

Regularly, in articles and essays, in posts and tweets, Virginia Woolf's quote, “...on or about December 1910 human character changed,” gets bandied about as the coming of the modern age. It is claimed, by such a writer as Edward Mendelson, that her statement was a serious joke. And according to him, her pronouncement was a hundred years premature. “Human character changed on or about December 2010, when everyone, it seemed, started carrying a smartphone,” he wrote in a recent New York Review of Books article. That is a serious joke, too. Each is probably not right; besides, trying to pinpoint something as elastic and elusive as human character is better left to the hacks. Few persons living or dead would attest to these dates when asked about human character, which most people probably think falls under the rubric we call life. Someone much more divested than Woolf or Mendelson, Thich Nacht Than,...

The British once took their titillation from heavily censored softcore films. Forty are now in the BFI’s new erotic archive
Long before 1970s sexploitation comedies such as Eskimo Nell and Come Play With Me brought bawdy humour and copious T&A to the commercial theatres of Britain, the country’s smut industry comprised an informal economy of club impresarios, carneys and photographers. Their work was part of a long lineage of stag films, 8mm home movies, mondo and nudist documentaries, and filmed stripteases exhibited to select audiences of men via cinema clubs or on private reels. Often produced on zero budget and distributed through a network of magazine subscriptions and black market retailers, these motion pictures were mostly disposed of or forgotten in short order.
The BFI’s new collection, The Pleasure Principle, the most recent addition to its massive Britain on Film online initiative, has digitised more than40 such examples of reclaimed erotica.

Trash is not necessarily a bad thing in a movie. Of course there are irredeemably trashy movies which are just plain awful, but then there are the transcendental trashy movies produced by directors such as Ed Wood, Doris Wishman, John Waters, H G Lewis and Troma. These directors manage to capture a weird quirk or a sincere passion for film making which is infectious, despite their shoddiness. Such films are a joy for fans of low rent cinema.
I have listed below nine trash masterpieces which we should kneel before like Magi, such is their entertainment value.
9. Come Play With Me (1977)
A British entry into the trash stakes, I used to find this film quite repellant, but I found my copy of Come Play With Me (which I got on a collect the coupons special from the Daily Sport!) the other day and I watched it and reappraised it. I actually found it quite entertaining.

Today marked the start of the 9th Fantastic Films Weekend at the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire and despite some teething problems, both technical and personnel, I’d say the opening day was a hit.
The main part of today’s festivities was taken up by Fantasma, a special symposium on horror featuring lectures from I.Q. Hunter, David Robinson, Russ Hunter and Jeremy Dyson (who you may know from The League of Gentlemen). The highlight of these lectures were the talks given by I.Q. Hunter and Russ Hunter (no relation).
I.Q. Hunter’s talk on British Sex Films covered the gamut of British exploitation cinema, from the more mainstream Confessions… movies to lesser known films such as Permissive. Judging by his talk, Hunter seems to have taken up the reigns laid down by filmmaker and critic David McGillivray, who is seen as the premiere spokesperson...
