A royal smile. On Sept. 18, the eve of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, an unseen portrait of the late monarch was released by Buckingham Palace. In the photo, the queen is dressed in a light blue dress, with her hair perfectly curled, as she smiles brightly for the camera. She is pictured wearing her favorite three-strand pearl necklace, pearl earrings and her aquamarine and diamond clip brooches which were an 18th birthday present from her father King George VI in 1944. According to the palace, the portrait was taken earlier this year to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee, as she became the first British monarch to reach the milestone. Queen...

Warning: contains spoilers for 2003 story ‘Jubilee’
The 2003 Big Finish story ‘Jubilee’ is one of Doctor Who’s richest. It was adapted by its author, Rob Shearman, for the 2005 TV episode ‘Dalek’. That adaptation took certain elements from the original but explores different ideas to ‘Jubilee’. ‘Dalek’ was part of the developing Time War story and much of its impact is due to the carnage being made personal to a traumatised Doctor. ‘Jubilee’ makes the Daleks scary by telling a very serious joke, the feedline being their now trope-laden familiarity, the punchline: violent, terrifying slaughter of everything different.
In its original context, ‘Jubilee’ was a savage look at how popular culture and fandoms can reduce terrifying ideas to memes, punchlines and children’s toys. It was written in the interim period between the 1996 TV Movie and the 2003 announcement that the series was returning to TV, so was intended for an older audience.

In a sign that perhaps the departing “Saturday Night Live” stars are returning to their greatest hits as they head out the door, this week’s cold open featured a wild sendoff for at least two of them. For Kate McKinnon, that meant her fan favorite alien abductee Ms. Rafferty, who once again shared a wildly inappropriate experience with Nsa officers played by Aidy Bryant and Mikey Day.
After showcasing her experience, McKinnon as Ms. Rafferty headed off into space, after one last goodbye. This clearly doubled as a McKinnon goodbye as well. “I kind of felt like an alien on this planet anyway,” the character said. “Well Earth, I love you, thanks for letting me stay awhile. Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
The clip opened with Bryant and Day, and sustained applause — clearly directed at Bryant, who is also departing after this episode.

Japanese Breakfast is headed by director, author Michelle Zauner. The group’s album, Jubilee, was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album at this year’s Grammys.

Update (3/14): Michelle Zauner joined in on the joke about Japanese Breakfast’s 2021 Jubilee cover art and Machine Gun Kelly’s Mainstream Sellout album art’s loose similarities. “2022’s feud of the year,” she tweeted, sharing the article below. She also discussed the story in an interview with Pitchfork. “I don’t actually think it looks anything like my album cover at all,” she said, “but I think it’s very funny that Rolling Stone put up an article about it just because there’s a circular fruit in the foreground.

MollywoodAhead of ‘Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan’, his big solo hero release and his 100th film, Saiju talks to Tnm about how he chooses roles, his discomfort with comedy roles and the kind of films he loves to watch.Neelima MenonYouTubeIt’s difficult to believe actor Saiju Kurup when he says that he is not really good with humour on screen. Ever since he did the role of a shady film reporter in Trivandrum Lodge (2012), who not only sexually exploits women with the promise of roles but also has no qualms in openly propositioning the new resident, Saiju Kurup has always reigned whenever his characters exhibited a dopey sense of comedy. That turned out to be his calling card in Malayalam cinema. Saiju’s thick arched eyebrows and big round eyes have an uncanny likeness to Mr Bean. Though he modestly gives credit to the writing, it is known that pulling off...

“… hideous, machine-like creatures. They are legless, moving on a round base. They have no human features. A lens on a flexible shaft acts as an eye, arms with mechanical grips for hands.” Terry Nation’s script for ‘The Survivors’ (aka ‘The Daleks’ Part Two)
The Daleks, along with Judge Dredd, are fictional fascists beloved by a wide audience. At their heart is a combination of terrifying concept – Nazis who always return (imagine) – with a triumph of design. The greatest Dalek stories tap into this uneasy alliance.
A quick summary of the thinking behind this article:
A. We thought people would enjoy it.
B. If a story features the Daleks in a small cameo role, I’ve not included it. I’ve removed ‘The Day of the Doctor’ and ‘The Time of the Doctor’: it seems silly to rate them based on their Dalek content.

The Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been awarded to some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past couple of decades. Winners like Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” Bon Iver’s “Bon Iver,” David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” and most recently Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” remain classics for music lovers. This year the race is one of the tightest ever, with a group of contenders including past Grammy nominees and exciting new bets. But all five were showered with praised by music journalists. The Grammy Award for Best New Artist can be an honor or a curse. Past winners like Adele, John Legend, Maroon 5, and Dua Lipa have become stars of their times, while some others seemed to fade away as soon as their names were called on Grammy night. But sometimes it’s better to get to know the nominees instead of simply judging the winners, as some of them like Kendrick Lamar, Sza, and Kacey Musgraves have turned out to be important artists in their respective genres despite losing this award. Let’s take a look at the 10 nominees in the Bna class of 2022. Who among them do you think we’ll still be talking about in 10 years?

While Grammy nominations usually include many commercial picks, the awards pride themselves on being decided by music industry peers judging quality over popularity, even banning chart-related messages in FYC ads recently. So we often can expect a couple of critical darlings to get nominated across genres and sometimes even in the general field. Nominations this past year for Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III” in Album of the Year and Phoebe Bridgers in Best New Artist are examples of how far acclaim can take you at the Grammys. Granted, we don’t know how this will hold up with no more nomination review committees giving a boost to lower-profile acts. Nonetheless, there are a lot of lauded artists who might surprise us this year.

Michelle Zauner, best known for her indie rock act Japanese Breakfast, will turn her best-selling memoir “Crying in H Mart” into a feature film for MGM’s Orion Pictures.
Orion has acquired the rights to “Crying in H Mart,” which hit No. 2 on the New York Times Best Sellers list earlier this year and follows Zauner’s experience growing up as a Korean child in Oregon. The studio has set Zauner herself to adapt the book for the screen, as well as provide the film’s score performing as Japanese Breakfast.
In 2018, Zauner contributed an essay, also titled “Crying in H Mart,” for The New Yorker, in which she wrote about crying inside her local Korean grocery store after her mother passed away from terminal cancer. The book found Zauner reckoning with her relationship with her mother as well as time spent in Seoul with her grandmother.
Stacey Sher and Jason Kim will produce.

When Michelle Zauner thinks about her latest album as Japanese Breakfast, she thinks of persimmons. “Persimmons are pretty present in a lot of Asian cultures, as gifts that you give to people,” she says over the phone from her home in Brooklyn. “I had seen an image of these hanging persimmons that are dried during the winter and turned into sweet, dried fruit. And I really like the idea of this very bitter, hard fruit before it’s ripened — on display and slowly maturing and turning sweeter and letting its environment impact it.
