How many movies have attempted to weave fiction out of non-fiction? I don’t necessarily mean real events, but actual non-fiction sources. There is Adaptation, but that accrued most of its inspiration from the adaptation process itself. There are others that don’t come immediately to mind, but I doubt there are many that take inspiration directly from a magazine article. And yet that is exactly what transpired with Devin Friedman’s Will You Be My Black Friend?, an article that appeared in the November 2008 issue of GQ about one man’s self-conscious quest to find black friends on Craigslist. It has a real acerbic and offbeat yet good-natured wit that won’t necessarily translate to celluloid but might act as a foundation for the voice of a script.
