A man comes to Korsbæk, Denmark, in 1929, opens a women's clothing store in competition with an established one - bringing him up against the conservative establishment including the bank manager. We follow the families until after WWII.
In Danish the title "Matador" refers to an influential businessman. It is also the Danish name of the board game "Monopoly".
In an episode that takes places in 1936, the Rodgers/Hammerstein tune "Edelweiss" is heard. This tune was not composed until 1957.
The original version ran for 24 episodes, each episode being between some 50 and 90 minutes. Program planners of Swedish television disapproved of this and re-edited the series into 32 episodes of almost exactly the same length, destroying much of the dramatic balance in the process.
