Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.
"War is Hell until it turns into a party," said Romero when asked what he was aiming at with the mob of soldiers and citizens hunting zombies for sport. The director mentions this sequence in Dawn is carried over from the end of Night of the Living Dead. "Don't you think this would be going on in this phenomenon was really happening?" he asks. "You can only hunt so many deer," Savini replies.

George A. Romero appears on screen as a TV Station Director (the bearded man wearing a scarf and a blue shirt) as his name appears, listing him as "Editor", in the on-screen credits beneath him.
In 1995 GMT Video Productions in Germany released a 147 minute unauthorized bootleg cut of the film on PAL VHS. It is the Argento cut of the film with alternate scenes edited into it from an old 16mm copy of the 138-minute Cannes Film Festival version, and some scenes from the US version. Only 500 copies were allegedly made.
